Roof top tents yay or nay?

You do realize the threads title, right? Just throwing out my 2 cents. I won't buy a tent that has to stay stationary on my truck. I'm going to buy a 4 seasons tent that I can take into the backcountry. Just seems like those tents prices are way to high, But if you have the money...

 

You can get em for like 2 grand from what I've seen. I'd get that over a RTT for sure since I already have a topper. The EZlift is pretty kickass.

 

I'm looking to get one myself, just not spending top dollar on one. I'll admit the fad is peaking my interest quite a bit and my wife LOVES the idea. She even gave me the green light to get one. I say worst case try it out for a year and see if it suits my needs. I can always resell it for a good price.

 

I had an Autohome Maggie on my previous 4runner and I really liked it. If I had the 4runner I would most likely get the Autohome Columbus clam-shell style. Most easy to close IMO.

Since I have a Tacoma now last month I placed my order for a Vagabond Drifter.

 

Right, but you said that you couldn't wait for RTTs to be "long gone". My question was, if you have no inclination to buy one because they don't fit your needs that's fine, but why would you care one way or the other if they're still around? Obviously some people like them and find them useful.

A windstorm can sure ruin a RTT camp quickly.

Prefer a topper because of this.

 

Can it? I mean I camp pretty much on top of mountains. So I'll say a no on that one

 

I always tie the end of my RTT down to my bumper if I'm camping on the beach or in the desert where the wind can pick up. Haven't had any issues since, but I learned the hard way about doing that because I had the RTT nearly fold in half with me in it out in the Mojave desert once lol. Wind was so strong it nearly closed the tent. Keep it anchored to the truck bumper though and it says in place.

 

Seen windstorms that last a few days, and shred ground tents.

An RTT would be toast, reduced to rubble. Former occupants left in a daze, shell shocked what Mother Nature did to them and their beloved RTT.

At least a hardshell topper makes a good retreat.

 

Been out twice this winter alone, in my tent, physically there, 20 mph winds steady across the lake with this sides rattling so hard I put earplugs in to get sleep. Gust up to 40.


So we doing the "we saw" "we heard", "this guy on YouTube" thing?

Like I said . Jokers. Half of this is comical . The other half is just straight up wrong. Keep saying how it is. I'm good for about 15-20 trips on average a year in this tent.

Funny. Dead of winter 60 miles to the closest town. Everyone is on RTT except one who's in a tent and another fits in a 4Runner.

The rest of the " Id never waste my money blah blah glamping Instagram " yet can't tell me how to properly seat the notch into the grove when a tent is unfolded , man you guys are unreal. Anyone never been to Australia? Thinking about going on a vaca there and I'd love input from someone who's never been haha

I had my RTT on my truck for a couple of years, but I found an M116 trailer that somebody was giving away, so that was my long term solution. The trailer turned out to be about a 3 month project....so it's no longer free, but we use it all the time. The RTT was an easy sell to my wife, so I get to keep camping! The setup is quicker on the trailer and we can leave the campsite to go explore when we want now.

 

Maybe I’m just an old soul but half the people camping in them suck at camping if that makes sense. But to each their own.

Couldnt agree more. Thus tents get sold on here all the time. And racks. And tires. And cheap gear.

It's really the meeting of two things. Trucks are becoming trendy right now, and so isn't outdoors stuff.

 

Love my Smittybilt Overlander. It takes about 5-10 minutes to setup completely. Most of the time I only pop open a window or two and leave everything else including the rainfly tucked away. So all in all around 5 minutes. Worth being off the ground in my opinion. I’ve done plenty of ground camping and this is definitely better. Costs much more than your average ground tent, but staying up off and away from the elements and critters is worth it for me. Plus it’s funny the way people look at my truck lol

 

That's a sweet decal and +1 for the fire extinguisher . Those, and real first aid / trauma kits are always overlooked
