Thank you! Definitely agree! Recovery, safety, comms, fuel, water, food, protection, tools. Not necessarily in that order. It’s all important if you plan on going out to places where signal is trash and response times for emergency services is long.

Heck yeah. I'm switching racks this year and the three things on my list are very low level lighting thats just enough to illuminate the bed for unpacking at night, better ways to secure boards, extinguisher, and shovel, and moving the straps, and shackles to a box on the roof to free up room behind the driver's seat.

    And for comms, HAM Baby!

Hey, it's nothing personal. Just a thread. There will be many more to bicker about in and tell jokes with people in and enjoy. If you need a breather join us over in the fishing thread. Tis almost season!

Hell yea man! I use quick fists and gun locks for shovel/axe, I made my own maxtrax mounts, Ansul a10h vehicle mount and use tuff stuff led strip lights for camping. I ran power to the bed for accessories. I have a CB for now and a couple ham handhelds. Need to upgrade!

I had an axe fly off my roof rack on the highway because the Quickfists failed, the wind was blowing so hard across the highway in the desert that those stupid rectangular plastic washers Quickfist provides snapped and the Quickfists slid right off the bolt. Looking in your rearview and seeing an axe twirling in the wind behind your truck is no fun, let me tell you.

I use metal washers now and haven't had any issues since, but I really recommend not using those plastic washers especially if they're holding a heavy object like an axe.

This thread is pure chaos. I guess I'll stick to my "Military Modular Sleep System 4 Piece with Goretex Bivy Cover and Carry Sack" for $300. Maybe I'll throw in a puss-pad and call it a day.

 Glad I wasn’t following you at that moment! Kinda feel sorry for the poor soul that was behind you, and probably soiled themselves and totaled their car thinking that you were throwing axes at them. Paints a tragic but comical picture in my mind.

Positive point for the RTT. If you have ever been awakened in the middle of the night in your bivy from the eye watering, nose burning smell of a skunk a few feet away. Thank god I had the presence of mind not to move or make any noise.

I've personally used both bags in the bivy during -6 winter night while it was raining (Gotta love FTXs...) But I was as snug as a bug in a rug until a woke up to discover my camelbak and boots were frozen solid.

Seriously, a quality sleeping bag in a bivy will go a long way. My plan is to use that and a 1 man tent if I feel like it while camping on the trail in the future. I liked the idea of a RTT but as many have pointed out in this thread, they are not without their flaws.

Fortunately we were out in the desert on the highway when it happened, very few cars around and no one behind me for quite a ways. We were in the slow lane cruising at about 70 and it landed off to the side on the shoulder, I don't think anyone saw it happen. But yeah, I got really lucky there...could have ended a lot worse than that.

Unfortunatly, most people do not think or care where the 100lb of synthetics will end up when they are done with it. Its something I am really trying to concious of in my life. Buying used is a great way to do better for the planet.

True enough, but if you're that worried about the planet maybe you shouldn't be driving a truck with an internal combustion engine that gets less than 20 mpg. ;)

    Thank you.
That post is ridiculous. There are far worst single use item issues than a roof top tent haha killing me.

This can be said about all the shitty Walmart chairs , tents and 99% of what’s sold there that falls apart after 2 uses.
