Roof top tents yay or nay?

I've been fortunate enough to dodge that one too with the RTT. Last year in August we saw three days worth of downpours. Enough to make the way we came in a real pain to get out. It sat for a couple days until the rain stopped after the trip before I could air it out.


Frost was a huge one this winter too. Tent was almost frozen solid. Just waited until the next sunny day and gave it some exposure

 

Seems like the tides have turned.....

Anyone who is against RTT’s is now the hipsters

Yeah I think we got it back in 2008-09 something like that. Great tent.I think I have a 2 and 3 person then a small eureka 1 person.
That's actually the tent I got tired of taking care of when i would pack it dirty. I had a little $ to spare and said hey lets try the RTT.

Yup. Don't think I'd own an RTT in a constantly wet climate. Although CA this year feels like fucking seattle.

 

I know and I love it, lol. We needed the rain so badly. Except we're supposed to have the worst allergy season in state history this Spring, I'm already starting to feel it (well I was, last couple of days have felt like winter again).

Nice I think I'm moving away from that feeling. Since my life leading up to this has been, get somewhere, establish camp (pitch the tent), and then go do what you want, I think it's naturally in our brain to feel were locked down with the RTT. It's just a feeling of setting something on that camping spot and establishing it. In reality, you don't need to open the tent until you're ready to sleep. And the next day if you go somewhere, yeah it takes 3-5 minutes to shut it close. Not letting that bug me though.

 

Dude I'm waiting for a lot of these trends to die. Places I used to fish and see maybe 2 boats on Max now have 15-20 vessels on it. State parks are slammed which sucks because they make a great jump off point before you travel into the woods. I guess the trucks becoming the new cool thing is alright. Brings down the prices of a lot of stuff.

I feel you there. I'm a pipe welder by trade and got tired of setting up and breaking a GT in the dark, especially if it's raining. But I'd say half my trips are fishing trips. So I'd want to be on the water Saturday morning. After getting out at 4 and heading 4 hours north, it's always been nice to have a quick easy set up and a nice surface to sleep on after destroying my body all week crawling around underground tunnels.

haha dude! That's exactly my situation. Most my trips are weekend fishing trips. I usually leave work on Friday evening and when you're beat from work that week, it's one of the best feelings showing up to "camp" in the dark, no matter the conditions, you just pop it open hop in, super comfortable. Next morning get on with your fishing.
Nice pipe welders make good $$. I was in fabrication while I was in school. Now i work at a cube in Mech E.

 

Haha we all move on. I weld and hand fabricate jet engine parts. But I get a rolley chair now haha

 

I wish my chair rolled that good. I go to dive under a cluster of tubes to weld them and it's like the stick scene from big daddy

 

Lol how I feel sometimes

 

Ive had my James Baroud Space for just over a year now. Ive used it several times and look forward to this summer to use it even more. However, i dont love it mounted on top of my shell on my DD (even if i dont drive often) and have been considering selling for hopefully close to what i bought it for to fund some other upgrades on the truck, gas for trips etc.

Ive always thought the biggest perk was being able to leave all bedding up there on multi-day trips, leaving the bed free for everything dirty. Ive enjoyed climbing up and getting a view from off the ground. My GF has always enjoyed it too, the mattress inside is great and feels safe. Its up in literally 30 seconds and neither of us have to fold and compress everything away and fit it into the truck to move. It all stays up there. However i dont have many long expeditions planned for the future, and its not exactly stealth camping when i want it to be.
