I'm not just saying this cus the thread, but my two buddies and I had a blind test with, bud light, miller high life, coors and PBR.
I guessed each one. I think half of it was luck but it's on video so... I can call myself a connoisseur shiet.

Using CA was honestly kind of a scapegoat. I just wouldn’t want the hassle of carrying a firearm in my truck at all times especially coming in and off base which is another layer of red tape and fun laws.

I just got my tent yesterday...I can't wait to use it. I've ground camped and hammock camped before this, and I'll probably still bring my hammock whenever I go out, in case I end up somewhere I cant set the tent up

So you are restricting you, not California. I find that is the case with most California snide remarks. :D

CA gets a lot of unwarranted hate. Im a SD native so I will always root for the state to pull it's head from it's backside but I don't see it happening anytime soon. Still, there is no place on earth that I've experienced that is awesomely beautiful as CA.

Hamms drinkers drop the pull tab into their beer, so they can choke on it instead of step on it. So, they got that going for them, which is nice. Why did that jeep driver not consult the bear?

Check out the ARB swag:thumbsup: unfortunately some of the other swags that are good as well are in the land of down and under. I had an RTT it worked great, slept in it through all weather conditions except snow and through high and low temps (7F). Why i sold it, working towards a tray, less weight, bulky. why a swag? waterproof 20-30lbs (easy to take off and on) easy to set up, low profile (fits under the awning and some fit on fold able cots..) and most importantly you dont have to stake it:thumbsup:

As for alucab, gfc, and whatever else, they are nice, pricey, bulkier and heavier than rtts, easier to set up though. If you dont care about weight and spending at a minimum 3k - 4k then yea those are good options..

Seriously, some of the stupidest arguments ever. Want one get one, don’t want one don’t.

Bitching about it sounds like people in the nosebleeds talking shit about the people in the first 15 rows, cause the seats you got are totally better since they’re cheaper and actually seeing the ball is totally overrated.

I have 2 expensive ground tents, they get used for backpacking or walk in camping, pulling them out 10 times a year car camping isn’t how I want to do them in.

I’ve had mine for 5 years and it gets 20 nights plus a year so after an initial purchase price brand new for $700 we consider it a value.

Some definite positives with roof top tents:

    1. I know where we’re going before we head out so I don’t worry about finding a good spot to set up, I have stackable RV leveler blocks and a level on my phone so no issue getting level plus we very rarely camp in organized camp grounds so getting stuck with a crappy spot instead of in the ?good spots? isn’t a concern.BBC204BC-DE9E-4549-AA11-54262E359030.jpg

If we do stay in a pay site I don’t care about a “good spot” since it’s a shitty alternative to begin with to dispersed camping and is usually while we’re on the road clocking a lot of miles.

At that point we want to set up, eat, sit around and drink beer til we go to bed then up early and hit the road.

I slept for decades in ground tents on thermorests and cheap air mattresses. I don’t wanna drive 8 hours or spend all day on a trail and have to sleep on the ground with a rock or a root in my back, didn’t enjoy it much in my 20’s, and as a carpenter I can’t do it in my 40’s.

    2. Dryer, warmer, cooler.

Ever experienced floating on an air mattress in a $400 ground tent in a torrential downpour? There are times it does not matter how many trenches you dig, how good you tarp, how expensive your tent is. It’s a fucking raft at that point.

I've had many a night where climbing up that ladder to a dry space and putting on dry clothes is so much nicer than sitting in your tent and not trying to let your feet touch the ground or shitier still putting your elbow in a stinking puddle in the middle of the night.

I’ve also had plenty of mornings we’re the last ones up when everyone else was up as soon as the sun hit their tent. In our tent with the windows open even in direct sunlight and hot out is way more pleasant than a thin walled ground tent.

    3. I don’t put my tent high enough to throw off my center of gravity or limit my clearance, never been an issue.03BDBC52-63F8-4BDA-9223-369652A0F6DC.jpg

I’ve been resting on the slider with two tires off the ground before with an empty bed anyway, so not like it doesn’t happen without the tent on.

    4. We keep sleeping bags/blankets and an air mattress stored in the tent the entire time the tent is on from March to October. Don’t have to worry about down bags getting soaked or a bulky air mattress taking up bed space.

Never an issue with mold, but you do have to open it up to dry it out if you close it wet, but that’s no different a process than storing a ground tent wet.

My truck is far from “recreation only”, and even with the tent on, storage is not an issue. It actually adds a level of protection for gear and is more accessible than my old canopy/topper
    1DA55DE8-1CC9-4BE4-ABDD-0E88A0E165E0.jpg

I’m lucky I guess in that I have a place to store it in the barn at my folks and a Massey Ferguson with a front end loader to pull it off/put in on. Not an issue for me.
