3.5 vs 4.0 Engines MPG.

I use Extra Virgin Olive. Lighter with a more distinctive taste.

 

Both my moms and my sisters trucks have that. It drives me crazy.

 

You get used to it after a while. You can always disable it.

It's the direct injection that give the 3.5 better mpg. I had a 2013 highlander v6 3.5 and it average 19 mpg. My tacoma average 19.5 but the tacoma have wider tires and sit taller. Toyota dont want to make a new engine cause they have to patent it. Which they have to pay millions to do that. They rather reuse old engine and save money.

 

Below is when I was keeping track. Don't have much experience with the 3.5L as I only test drove them a few times.

2017 AC 4x4 2.7L Auto - 20 average stock (18 with 265/75R16)
2015 DC 4x4 4.0L Auto - 18.5 average with 265/75R16, lift and sliders
2011 DC 4x4 4.0L Auto - 15 average with 285/70R17 lifted
2010 4Runner 4x4 4.0L Auto - 19 average with 275/70R17 leveled
2003 AC 4x4 3.4L Manual - 15 average with 265/75R16 lifted

 

I just test drove a 4runner with that 4.0 man, that thing is so nice.

Just curious why the Tacoma went with 3.5 in 2016 but the 4runner stayed with there 4.0. I know its a different 4.0 than what was in the 2015 but why not the option of the 4runner 4.0 in the 3 g's.

 

Next gen 4runner isn't out yet. Odds are it changes then.

 

Need to realize that part of the reason Toyota is phasing out the 4.0l is due to increased emissions standards set forth by EPA that they have to meet.
Perfect example of this is with modern Diesel engines vs the ones at the beginning of 2000’s. Up until the late 90s diesel were basically left untouched, now everything has to be tier4 final complient (egr, dpf, doc, scr and reductant).

I was in a tow truck a few weeks back when my motorcycle rear tire got a big hole in it. I was still 25 miles from home and the freeway was just too crazy for me to try to plug the tire. So I called AAA. When we came to a stop the first time and his truck shut off, it was like...what just happened? That's when he told me that the tow truck had that. I could never get used to it!

Now about this gas mileage thing... How many of you are in Kalifornia? Where they doctor up your gas to make sure you never seen the advertised gas mileage of any vehicle!

When I got my 16 Tacoma a few weeks back, I found myself doing the same thing I do with my 2015 Highlander and my wife's 2014 Rav4 (that we traded in on the Tacoma). I put it into the manual mode and shift it myself! So needless to say, I haven't had much problem with it trying to find gears all the time! And unless we are going down hill, it seldom sees 6th gear!

 

LOL I can understand your reluctance. Sooner or later, there will a hybrid Tacoma and it will have this function. Now will it be worth the cost? That's a different question.

The best I could get, and this was grandma driving it 2.5 hours away and grandma driving it 2.5 hours back home. I average 18-19 normally though. In my 06 TRD OR, I would have had to stop for gas before I got home.

 

The Tacoma with the 2gr fks is much quicker and efficient than the 1gr Fe Tacoma’s or the 1gr fe 4 runner. I have a 4 runner, it is a pleasure to drive I have had 3 of this generation. Comparable to a crown Victoria it is a very comfortable, heavier vehicle with a proven drivetrain.
My wife drives it mostly. When she drives the Tacoma she always comments that it is zippy.

She doesn’t read the forums, she doesn’t know to look for a pause or Hesitancy or shifting issues. Her opinion is it’s a quick little truck after driving the Trd pro 4 runner all the time.

Mileage is simply load and speed dependent.if I drive 80 I can range from 15-19 mpg depending on the wind. Around town it’s 19.5. Two lane roads 60mph or less 22-26mpg as anyth8ng slower than 50 and above 28 is highly efficient cruising.

If I really cared about the end all be all of fuel economy I would not own a 4 runner or a Tacoma would I?

I don’t think so. I’ve been keeping track of my MPG with an app and the highest i’ve ever gotten is 18mpg (mostly suburban only driving)...and that was only once. My usual mix of highway and city gets me about 13mpg consistently. Stock truck. I’ve tried driving like a granny, i’ve tried different gas stations, removing my charcoal filter, changing air pressures, adding injector cleaner, etc. I just can’t get anywhere near the numbers some people are posting. I think some trucks are cursed.

**Transmission and diff fluid level checks are all I have left to hope for.....
