Found this link while looking through the interwebs:

    http://www.toyotareference.com/guts/tacoma16_engine.pdf

Has a lot of general info and some logic on how the 2gr works and materials used.

Also noticed it says 91oct min for fuel. Thoughts?

*Uploded the reference material Incase the link goes dead in the future*

does anyone know if the Tacoma have adaptive tables based off octane rating or knock count like ford does with their eco boost motors?

Good find. My thoughts on the octane requirement are "Crap, have I been putting the wrong gas in my truck?!"

This is from the document. So in general terms yes, there are sensors that alter the ignition timing which would reduce knock and detonation.

"Depending on the vehicle condition, and based on signals from various sensors, the ECM calculates the optimal injection timing and volume, and controls the fuel injector assembly (for direct injection) and fuel pump assembly (for high pressure)."

Likely it means 91 RON, the rating used in most of the world which correlates to 87 AKI, which is what US uses.

Same engine (3.5L) in my 2015 Lexus GS 350 f sport AWD. "Premium fuel only" 91 min octane. But different tune in Lexus 306hp tune. Detuned 278hp Tacoma 3.5 only requires 87 octane. I only run premium in Tacoma same as Lexus.

I’m gonna try 91 next time I fill up. I drove through Utah once and filled up with 83 Oct and it ran like shit, got 15 mpg on the highway. Curious what different 91 would make

I run 91 to 93 octane, travel to and from cabin two lane roads 60 to 65 mph and average 21 to 23 mpg 260 miles one way to cabin. Stock wheels and tires, and 15 TRD Pro suspension.
