Haha, so you do have an extra spot on the boat.....

So charter fishing is kind of different than a lot of people expect and as long as you know what you're getting into, you won't be disappointed. Charter fishing and more specifically billfishing, is less fishing and more trolling. You'll be on the boat, and your job will mostly be to hang out and have a good time. The first mate does all of the work. All of it. He rigs everything, he sets everything, in fact he'll likely pull the rod when there's a fish on, and hand it to whoever's turn it is once they're set up in the fighting chair. That's another thing. There will be an order as to whose turn it is. Unfortunately, I have yet to land billfish, simply because it's never been my turn when one was hooked up. But to increase chances what they usually do is use outriggers. So they can be trolling 10 or more rigs at all different depths at all times. Someone will yell "fish on". If you're next, hop in the chair, the mate will put the rod in place, and hang on buddy.

Tuna are a great time. Dolphin are probably my favorite. There is nothing on this planet prettier than a dolphin underwater. I mean the pictures of people holding them up are beautiful. But they start to fade as soon as you take them out of the water. Seeing them next to the boat is incredible.

Dude, if you can afford to charter the whole boat, 100% do it. Being on make up boats is usually miserable because you're surrounded by a bunch of random jerk offs. I've gotten lucky a few times and got hooked up with decent strangers. But typically I like to just get a few friends together and split the cost of the whole boat.

2nd on doing the whole boat. At most I've ever paid for the whole boat (just myself & a buddy) was $800 & was more than worth it w/ the amount of fish we "caught".

Ugh. I fished out of the Oregon Inlet Marina in NC for yyeeaarrrssss and it was $800. Then in comes some stupid ass reality show about tuna, blows the whole place up, and now.....Ha! $800 won't get you a spot in the engine compartment.

If you’ve got it man it’s worth it. Especially if they put you on some fish. Look up some sailfishing vids on YouTube. For me it’s a gamble worth taking. Most captains will do anything they can to put you on fish. Even if no boats in the area are hooking up on billfish, they may ask you hey, you wanna switch it up and start going after x species.
