SOS: 2009 Backup Camera Install

Hoping you lads will be able to enlighten me. I just ordered a Sony XAV-AX1000 Receiver (+ dash kit, receiver wiring harness, Posi connectors, screw pack) for my 09 4cyl. There's an empty backup camera slot in my tailgate handle, so I found the part number and ordered one on eBay. Few questions:

I've been abusing the search bar and have yet to read of an 09 that wasn't pre-wired but still haven't found a definite answer. How exactly would I move the wiring/harness from the overhead console to the head unit or, if it's not pre-wired, run it all the way from the head unit to the tailgate?

Would it be safe to assume it's pre-wired? If so, am I going to need anything else (additional wiring, harness, electrical tape, etc.), or will the wiring already be connected to the taillight with a harness for the camera connection in the tailgate? Any tips for a quicker/smoother installation?

I'd like to be fully prepared before I start taking everything apart. Thanks TW!

 

Look at your fuse panel behind the little door on the left of the steering wheel. If it’s pre-wired, there will be a little white connector with red, white, and black wires

That is the harness that will go back towards the tailgate.

 

Ok, so should I just mention this to Crutchfield and ask what would be needed to route a backup camera to the radio? I ended up cancelling the camera order incase it wasn't the right one

 

if you're trying to use factory wiring, I don't think crutchfield will be much help. Not sure they'd have the parts. And even if you buy there factory camera, you'll still have to do some splicing to get the video signal over to the new radio

 

Would it be easier to just go with separate wiring and an after market camera then?

 

Honestly, yes. And you’ll get a MUCH better quality image. Factory Toyota cameras (especially back on the 2nd gens) are a garbage picture.

Awesome, thank you. Would I have to get one that comes with the handle like the one you linked (my handle does have a camera slot already)? Also, would that one plug right into my head unit? One last question: After installing that, will the camera display start automatically when the truck is put into reverse? Price seems great.

 

That one cones with the replacement handle.
It uses a basic yellow RCA end to plug right into the input on the radio.
Radio will show the camera when the reverse wire (purple/white in the Sony harness) is triggered.
