oh no....TSB-0171-16 Driveline vibration

I only feel it in the steering wheel though. Wish someone could find a fix.

 

I appreciate the reply and the insight. I used to be a mechanic and at the time I was ASE certified in brake systems. I am fairly certain that the effect I am feeling while braking is from the rear drums just like you said. I knew that right away. However, with that being said: I find it highly improbable that there “was a bad batch of drums”. Not when there is a TSB replacing axle shafts for this issue due to the axle flange boss being out of specification and not meeting the rear hubs appropriately, this is likely why you have seen people post that toyota turned their drums and the problem was gone, but then the problem comes right back in a few months. It is likely that the out of round brake drums are the symptom, not the cause. Lets treat the cause. I highly doubt that whole “bad batch of drums deal” but I would be happy to be wrong. I saw you post in another thread looking to upgrade your drums, I must say that I put 200k on my old 1st gen taco and only replaced the original drums once (oem toyota) and I towed and beat the snot out of that truck. This is unacceptable at 2,000 miles. I am sure I can get it fixed with or without toyota but I don’t want to throw parts at it or let them just try turning the drums down (@ 2k miles lol) that is not a very smart approach at diagnosing things, but has been guinea pigged on other peoples trucks on the forum here by whatever dealer they have gone to.

Quick update, just got my truck back today, transmission was 1/2 a quart low and now it is smoother but still vibrations felt when accelerating in the pedal and floor just not as much, wondering if damage was done from having low fluid so long? They said the rear drums were round and the tolerance was acceptable between the axle hubs and drums.

Really frustrated that it was low since I have been asking for it to be checked since the truck was new, 7,000 miles later they realize it’s low, no leaks anywhere, total bs.

 

New member here...Less that 200 miles on the odometer and already feeling this shuttering when breaking at low speed....this is frustrating and hope it's not transmission

Do you notice vibrations in the foot well and gas pedal when accelerating at highway speeds or just the rumble strip when coming to a stop? You may have a lose u-bolt on the rear axle.

 

It's nice to see the original issue was in 2016. My 2019 Pro has a vibration but at 70 to 75. I had the dealer check balance on the tires and they said they checked the brakes also. The service writer was quick to schedule an appointment to have someone drive the truck and investigate it more. After the service it seems the vibration has decreased but isn't gone.

 

Good luck. Toyota told me “it’s normal” and I drove 3 new SR5s and they all do it to a degree. My first 19 was bad, so bad that after Toyota said “it within normal range” I traded in my new truck for another new SR5 that does do it to the degree that the other did. Wish they fix why its doing it and put out a TSB or something to fully correct it. Doubt they will though.

 

It seems like everyone vibrations are different, mine are when slowing down and when maintaining / slightly accelerating around 55-60MPH but it’s only felt in the gas pedal and floor board, it’s more of a buzzing pulsation than a vibration, I wonder if it’s my exhaust

 

Oh another note, check your lug nut torque! I still need to do this myself.

 

The new 19 Tacoma’s have vibrations all tons of different points. A lot in the steering wheel and a lot in the pedal and floorboard. I think it’s all normal and nothing can be done about it’s unfortunately.

 

Toyota needs to fix this crap, I task anyone with this problem to contact corporate and open a case, if enough cases are opened Toyota should issue a T-SB that will fix newer model years

 

I only have about 300 miles now...only notice when slowing down around 20mph the rumble strip when slowing down. I have even let off the break during this and it remains to rumble...so it's not the breaks....It feels like I can feel the teeth in the cogs in the diff....driving me nuts.

 

Hi. I’ve been posting on another thread. I just had this done on my 2017 SR5 (which I found odd since it isn’t covered but whatever). Driveline vibration still present but not as pronounced.

By the way, my drums have been replaced twice. They told me they had to order two batches this time before they got ones that weren’t warped.

I got Toyota Corporate involved since this is the third time with the same issue. Look at my post history if you want specifics.

 

My 2019 TRD OR with 1500 miles has the same vibration (floor, wheel) at 20mph - braking, gliding, accelerating - doesn't matter. At all other speeds it is smooth. It became very noticeable when I lifted the truck about 2" (AAL in back, Bilstein 5160 / 6112 front). Given the lift, I am wondering if a change in pinion angle affected this. Maybe I should add an angle shim the rear axle to put the rear diff more in line with the driveshaft? Any other ideas?

 

You’ll need to take measurements with an inclinometer, there’s a write up on this forum on how to do it, axle shims will probably help you with the low speed shudder but not with the floor vibes, in my opinion this is engine/transmission mount and exhaust related, I notice it even when someone else with an loud exhaust is passing by me on the road, these trucks really lack adequate insulation, I’d guess 2.0-2.5* shims (important: skinny end pointed forward), they say you should shim 1.0* for every inch of lift, even though you have a 2” lift but your probably a bit over that on the rear, did you take measurements before lifting? You could also try a carrier bearing drop but I’m not really a big fan of them because your increasing the angle of the driveshaft coming out of the transmission unnecessarily.

 

I appreciate the feedback. I will measure and get some shims...when I have the enthusiasm to take apart the rear suspension once again!

 

After a while, I wanted a truck again. Sold the 4Runner and decided to try the Ranger. No regrets, No issues. Great engine and trans. Very complete tech that works. Android Auto is fantastic. LED Lamps throughout inside and out. Ford has provided all the tech one needs. Plus best in class performance, towing and hauling.

I held off until the 2020 Tacoma information was released..

ALAS, the SAME tired engine and troublesome transmission/ rear end.Weak tech...No thanks.

Toyota is not the same company as in the '90s when they took my 80K Tacoma in my Avatar and replaced both head gaskets free because they claimed for three years there was a bad batch. I had friends with 120K on their Tacomas being canvassed to come to service and have the head gaskets replaced.. THAT was the Toyota of olden days and they are still living on "reliability" when it's clear they cut corners and are denying provable issues.

That was the Toyota of old. The new Toyota is no better than Ford.

 

If anyone is interested to know, the TSB did not fix the driveline vibration. Take it easy.

 

Installed 3 degree shims today, and poof! Vibrations are gone!
