Might be a noob question but how do you keep your tow hook from being stolen?

I think it depends where you live. Guys call them D-Rings around here, as well as shackles. Technically I think shackle is a better term, but I think D-Ring is taking over.

They come from the rigging world and the manufacturers (like Crosby) call them shackles. It's basically doing the same job in a recovery situation.

As far as the OP, they aren't really meant to be left on. Corrosion can affect the integrity of the shackle and compromise it's strength.

Same, but out in the weather they seem to really lock themselves up and it takes banging them against my bumpers to knock the pins loose enough to open them up

I prevent stuff from being stolen by not leaving it in when I don't need it.

I think most of the people that leave it out are just mall crawler posers who don't actually use it.

And cue the 'ya totally a mall crawler' posts of those who leave it in with the one picture of them actually off road.
    I said most not all.

Other than the new guys, everyone I wheel with keeps gear away until on trail or needed.

Leave them off when not in use. Securing them any other way could come back to bite you... one day you'll need to use it, and you'll have misplaced whatever key or mechanism is needed to take them off. Besides that, I don't think most are actually lost to theft... most are more likely lost because the pin comes loose and works it's way out. Sure, you could tighten it down extra snug, but then you run into the same potential issue as before; you'll need it, but the pin won't want to budge. Also keep in mind, that unless you live and wheel in dry places, eventually all that rocking back and forth of the shackle will wear the inside coating of it's mount. One day you'll go to remove one and find it to be rusted and pitted on the inside.

I keep mine in my recovery bag; then again, I mainly use soft shackles these days anyways (which also stay in my recovery bag until needed).
