I tore out that carbon filter thinking it was the air filter. Damage was done before I saw the filter in the movable part of the housing. Any advice? Truck seems to run fine, but I think I need this part back in there to avoid warranty issues.

Once you quit laughing, let me know what you think I should do. Looks like I have to buy an entirely new housing as it was all plastic welded together.

buy a new carbon filter from toyota...you could probably score a used 1 off of anyone who has done an aftermarkert intake...it shouldn't be expensive at all probably around $20-30 for the new carbon filter...

^it won't explode without the carbon filter...most aftermarket CAI don't have the carbon filter that way less restriction meaning more power making...

Thanks for quick responses. Looks like I don't have much to worry about, but boy did I feel like a moron when I found out it wasn't my air filter. Something about that plastic rivet popping just kind of stung.

I'll chime back in if I notice any performance differences. BTW 2009 4.0 V6

Copy that last post. I did make sure to get all the little bits out of the air filter housing. I even double checked because I was paranoid.

No noticeable difference, didn't explode. Whew!!

New K&N in place, no difference there either I can feel. Maybe at full tilt on freeway I'll notice something.

They are actually very important... These engines don't like going through ethnic neighborhoods! The smell of some of the unknown foods really makes these engines act peculiar. I would replace it or at least put one of these on the outboard side of the air filter!!!

I suspect the k&n stopsign sticker insures a tech will never open that housing up during a service visit ever again.

I almost did the exact same thing. When I couldn't get it out and went to grab a screwdriver to jab a whole and rip it out, I decided to rethink the idea and saw the air filter....D'oh
