That’s not a bad price at all.

For anyone else curipus, ten 8” strips of 1/8” is $15. Almost 7’, precut and no millscale. That’s a great idea for practicing.

 

Couple quick questions for those in the know. Am looking to pick up a welder for a bunch of projects (sliders, armor, bed rack etc). I am pretty set on a Miller unit (unless there are some serious arguments against). I have my eye on the 211 ($1315) which should do what I want/need...

But I keep wondering if it's worth the extra cost for a multi process unit like the 215 ($2045 with TIG kit)...

I probably wouldn't use the TIG all too often, but have experience/background with the process and would like the option to use it if need be. Should I get the 211 or splurge on the 215? Or should I go with something entirely different altogether? What say you?

 

Buddy from work has been praising an everlast and a few videos also say it's pretty good. Actually ordered one to "test". Its a stick and tig welder. Has a dedicated 6010 port. It's not to expensive for home projects but you do need to buy your tig rig and bottle.

I don't care for multi purpose units.

I haven't mastered MIG welding, what makes you think you can master 3 different types if welding.

BTW, I've been mig welding professionally for 25+ years.

If I need specialized welding, I have no problem paying someone that does that version of welding.

I get it it, we love gadjets and options. Welding machines is not worth it to have all those choices.

 

If you want a m.p machine this is a really nice set up. Will be my next purchace when my hobart dies.

FWIW, I realize that I won't be a master of MIG or TIG in my lifetime. I'm basically trying to decide if it's worth a couple of extra bucks to get a unit that gives me more options.

 

The only reason it would be worth it to me, was if I needed to sell it in a hurry. Multi purpose welders will go quick.

But so do single pupose units.

 

Made some more progress on the headache rack. Getting there! Been trying out my Hobart Handler 190, it welds awesome...nice and hot.

 

If you ever need to do some sheet metal, bam! Tig's there for ya

 

Just know the the multi process machines in the price range below @ $5000.00 are pretty much a compromise The only reason Miller and Lincoln built lower end machines is to get some of the market share from the foreign built units.

Go with what brand has the best support in your area .

Buy local if at all possible you have to buy shielding gas sure it will cost more but you can`t compete with a company never seeing the machine just having them shipped from the manufactures warehouse .

Every one wants AC tig will you be happy with just DC Tig .

Then some people don`t have the eye hand Coordination to get good at tig welding

There is no reason why you can`t be certified in all the processes it was more common years ago .

For some jobs it was the only thing that got you back to show what you could do

Once you have a understanding of just what needs to be done to me the processes are all the same

 

I know we all use what material that is left over from paying jobs .

I made this rotation angle finder clamp. It came in handy when fitting up the bent pieces to my bumper that needed to be rotated and matching on both sides.




I also finished up my bumper. Added some gussets, capped the ends, and welded the backsides. Sorry, no weld porn here, but I got a lot of practice and my welds were looking better at the end than when I started the project.

Lol. Thanks man. I actually had to grind away a couple ugly welds. I was so dead and tired at the end of the day, some welds looked like crap. I used a 1/8" grinding disc and erased those and rewelded.

 

It's going on my Tacoma. It won't be too super heavy. Shouldn't weigh much more than 70 lbs with full length angle iron bed rails included. 1.5" square tube, and 1.5x3" rect tube for top bar. The uprights on the side and ears are 3/16 or 1/4" wall....forget which, rest is 1/8". Gonna have lights and screen or louvers to protect back window.

 

I welded some sliders onto @Uphillshunter Taco.

I also finished laying the carpet for my sleeping platform

Nope, bed rails are 2x2" 3/16" angle. It's gonna be heavy duty, but hopefully not too out of proportion to the the truck.

I'm planning on putting some kind of padding between the rails and bed. Any ideas on that? Thinking some 1/8" closed cell foam strips?

 

My Leer 100XQ uses similar foam strips on the bedrails.
