Rear Diff Options

I am starting to look at some different options to replace my wonderfull open differential in my 03 Tacoma, I have found a few different types and I am looking for some opinions.

1. Auburn ECTED - E locker
2. Powertrax No Slip
3. rear diff from TRD Taco
4. ARB Air Locker
5. other

These are some of the different options I have found. I am not made of money unfortunately, if I was I would go for the ARB in the front and rear.
So basically I am looking for something cheap, reliable and won't get me into trouble on icy snow packed roads as I have to deal with them for 5-6 months a year as I hear the Powertrax No Slip and others that are the same can be a little squirly on ice and snow covered roads.
At first I was looking at the Powertrax but then I found the ECTED from Auburn and that has me interested as it's a LSD/E-Locker all in one. If you have and ideas or you would recommend one of the four, I appreciate the help and feedback!

Just installed a powertrax no-slip this past weekend. AWSOME!! and CHEAP!! (price).

Very nice ! Even with my 4 cyl I have to watch my "side slip" on rocks and mud.
Full time locked under acceleration. No noise, cant even tell it's there. And was only about $400.

However to the OP. I can see how it might become a problem for you on the ice and the snow. We dont get that much here in SC so thats why I chose a full time locker.

 

does it work good on offroad trails and stuff like the elocker does?

Has anyone heard anything about the Auburn ECTED? I am starting to like that option as you can unlock it when you don't need it, IE when we have snow and ice and sub zero temps for 5-6 months of the year so I don't spin out on the highway when I come across black ice or snow cover!

 

Is this not an ECTED? I'm not sure if this is it or not.

I would recomend the detroit truetrac, don't know how it would do in the front in the snow but I have it in the rear and I love it, its a worm gear type lsd (no clutch packs) so even though its a lsd there is no clutches to overpass each other so no matter what both wheels will alway pull but its sort of like a 60%-40% pull, I can't even tell mine is there when i am on the highway, its bout 500 bucks for rear

 

Ok well scratch that one from the list right now, not sure how the powertrax would preform on the ice and snow and thats what worries me the most, I really don't want to kill myself on the highway for extra off road ability but it seems I either have to find a Diff out of a wrecked TRD or install an ARB air locker both of which are too expensive right now, I don't know of any other options.

You are right to be concerned about automatic lockers in snow and icy conditions. The real value of the selectable locker, like the TRD e-locker, is the ability to turn it off when you don't want it. my 2 cents.....

 

So the cheapest/safest route would be an LSD at this point due to budget? and when I go to trade up obviously make sure its TRD Off Road!!

 

theres an article in 4wd toyota about yukon grizzly e lockers and they seem to get a great review they tackled some pretty ridiculous terrain with it i believe they go for around 485
