This is fairly tough to explain but here goes....So I bought a 2019 Tacoma TRD sport auto 4x4 on Dec 14 2018. When i drove it home I started to feel some shuttering going on. I thought maybe it was just a new feel and things would get better....no, never happened. So under light load like heading uphill is the time to feel it the most. The shutter can be felt often tho, no true pattern with speed, rpm's, nor conditions. For most part it's at a constant speed almost as if the engine has a misfire...so started with the shutter, now it's doing much more. When accelerating, the gears will shift up and down n up n down and almost lag until it shifts again and then will shutter until the truck slows down. Also when going around 20MPH through the neighborhood, when coming off the gas and making a turn then once back on the gas, the trans seems to be in neutral and won't go into gear until I let off the gas completely.... another issue is when at a constant speed on a highway around 50-60 (again no true pattern) the truck will downshift what feels like 2 gears and damn near redline!!! On top of all that, when I'm at a complete stop, in drive, with foot on brake, the truck seems to start to high idle and overpower the brakes and pulls forward on its own (did that only 2 times on 2 separate nights)... dealer says it's all normal. So i called Toyota and started a claim. They say it's normal but want to have additional tests done. I requested a new dealer and starting from scratch. Has anyone ever heard or had any of this happen to them and what should I do. My background is I am 34, been driving since I was 17 and have never had a mechanic EVER work on my vehicles with the exception of new cars with maintenance plans like Toyota care.... i have always fixed my own cars/trucks/boats/atvs ect....I'm not a dummy and really know my stuff but this is getting rediculous. The one dealer blamed it on my progressive snapshot device for insurance discounts, and they cleared the trans and re programmed it. The problem was never fixed just kept getting worse. I went back 2 more times, took a ride with the "big guy" who felt the shutter and told me to bring it back that he would take care of it. Once back, they again said it was all normal but decided to again clear and reprogram the trans. No codes were ever thrown during any time so they are using that as their arguing point claiming that since no codes r thrown that the vehicle is operating normal.... Just 2 nights ago It was raining, and I was on the parkway cruising at about 55, the truck did the downshift thing again and I thought I was going to crash, I am almost scared to drive this thing... any advise???

I get that misfire feel too. Cruising, in sixth gear light accel. Thing misses like a MF or at least feels like it.

It's ridiculous tho, kinda thinking something with the torque converter. It's a new trans and ecu in 19 vs the 16-18s or so they say...dealer says it's a new 7 speed and also big Toyota told me it's a CVT.... I'm not sure about the CVT thing, but honestly it's starting to get dangerous.

I got a manual trans because I really wanted it, however when shopping for this truck and doing test drives across the brands ( no manuals were ever available to test ) I had to test ride the auto in the taco and boy was it horrible. The trans felt confused.

I’m extremely happy with my M/T however I could have never lived with the auto in this truck.

Just from reading tho I have heard great things about OVTune helping the auto trans tremendously.

It’s going to be hard to prove your claim when your plugging unauthorized third party devices in your OBD2 port.

Dealer is full of it....16-19 (and looks like 20) are identical in the powerplant dept. New programming for them I’d buy but telling you it’s different is lying to get you out the door.

There's your problem. Everyone involved is an idiot or they're liars that think you're an idiot.

Welcome to Tacomaworld. You obviously haven't worked on much if you think it's a seven speed or a CVT.
The downshift is normal on modern trucks. Its engine braking. This engine does some unique things because of Adkinson cycle. The high idle when stopped is simply the engine RPM changing because of the AC compressor kicking on and off. Yes, it does that even though the AC is not on. It does this to keep the seals lubricated in the compressor.

Can you return the truck? Take a loss on a trade? I know that sucks, I'd be pissed that's all I can say. Toyota should own up to it.

I'm starting to think there are batches of bad trucks. For what it's worth, my AT has not had ANY issues that others have claimed (or the so called "I'm so glad I got a MT" BS you see here all too often), not helpful. What I can tell you is that this isnt normal, go test drive another new truck and then take yours out with a service manager, you should see the difference right away, oh and take that progressive thing OUT of the truck before you bring it in.

Hope the problems are resolved for you one way or another.

What your experiencing doesnt sound normal to me. Have they checked the trans fluid level. Mine was 1.5qts low.

Dude. That is not normal. If they won't fix, you did the right thing by filing a claim with corporate. The truck "learns" how you drive, but it isn't a complete deranged maniac. The "adjustment period" isn't walking into a psycho vehicle. Make them make it right. There is no way that is "normal" as the dealer says. Something is wrong, and they need to make it right.

Frank, why did you wait so long to voice your concerns? Please notethere are lemon laws available to you, if you feel the truck is defective you need to drop it off to your nearest Toyota dealer, as others have mentioned. If the truck has been in for service for more that thirty days and not fixed, the dealer will have to comply with the lemon laws and purchase the truck from you. Do your due diligence with your state regarding lemon laws, each state is different.
Toyota trucks are not for everyone, as such, for your next purchase think about the Honda Ridgeline.

My 18 does the same thing. Lmk if you find a solution. I thought about getting the orange virus tune to see if it’ll stop it.

Uhmm....no. The 3rd Gen Tacoma does not have a CVT. The automatic is also a 6 speed, not 7.

Damn, I'm so glad I got a good one. But who the heck doesn't just go back to the dealer and state the problem? I find it very hard to believe a dealer will tell a complaining customer it's normal and they're wrong. Then another dealer confirms the problem and doesn't do anything? Unheard of.

I would take it to the dealership and would not get it back until its fixed. My family rides in my truck. Ridiculous. I hope you get this issue resolved.
