Hitch mounted Bicycle racks

Btw, that’s not a Kuat, that’s a Yakima.

 

That was a Yakima that didnt last long. I dont have any rubbing/entanglement issues on the kuat sherpa 2.0.

 

1up racks are expensive, but probably the best. Aluminum so it won't rust and it's plenty thick stock material.

 

I was rear ended on the freeway last week, some lady following too close and driving aggressively ended up bumping my rack. Her front grill bumper and hood were crumpled. My one up, just scratched.

 

Love my Hollywood Trail Rider rack. Bought it for my fat bike . Bike sits in two hoops that hold tires vs platform. Whoops are adjustable so you can space bikes optimally, and two sets of hoops included for tires up to 2.5" wide and 5" wide. Collapsible, foldable, excellent ground and vehicle clearance, integrated locks included and keyed to hitch lock. And its one of the less expensive units.

 

I tried the Kuat NV 1, NV 2, and Sherpa 2, and none would clear my tailgate with or without bikes. So I went with the Rocky Mounts Backstage hitch mount rack and have been super happy with it.

It’s well built, easy to use, and having full access to the bed without having to unload bikes has been extremely handy. The only downside is it’s a little heavy and the cable lock isn’t as slick as Kuat’s.

You can kind of see it loaded with two bikes in this pic. It’s the best option I could find for my truck for a hitch mount 2-bike rack.

 

I use the Yakima Bedrock and love it. Can fit four bikes pretty easily and keeps the bed free for everything else I need for bike/camp trips.
I don't like hitch mounted racks. Too much road grime.

Thule x2 with the harbor freight double receiver setup.

 

Does any of your hitch racks bounce or move when going over bumps? If so how you guys prevent it from bouncing? Using bolt and nut or just a locking pin?

I do about half road biking and half mountain biking... would the Thule T2, 1UP, and Kuat N2 all work well with both thin and thick tires? Any issues opening the tailgate when using any of these bike racks?

 

The Kuat held both road and mountain tires great. Unfortunately I couldn’t open the tailgate all the ways with the rack horizontal or hinged down. I was bummed since it’s a really nice rack.

 

Thanks for the information! That's definitely a concern of mine and for $500+ it's hard to ignore that.

 

Kuat makes a 2" hitch mount swing out >2" receiver so you can convert any hitch mount to swing out.

 

I have tried many racks and all have failed over time From driving off road. I know they say not to wheel with your rack. Has anyone had luck with the 1up or Alta racks when wheeling?

 

Well, I just bought the 1up super duty double. It will be arriving just in time for the weekend!

 

Ok does anyone have a bike mounted directed to a rear bumpers swing out?

There is a photo on CBIs website that has that going on

 

For us with a large spare on the rear bumper the hitch rack was always gonna be an issue
