Anybody run JBA headers?

Do you have to lower the transmission to install headers?

It really takes 8 hours to do the job?

 

No. You can take the rear trans mount off and jack it up a little from the rear to get the stock crossover out or you can cut the stock crossover out. Your choice.

You do not have to do anything with the transmission.

As far as I can tell the bulk of the time is removing the stock manifolds. But I can already see that this will be a massive PITA and tedious lining shit up putting bolts in, trying to fit tools in awkward positions etc.

5 hour sessions

But I’m pretty thorough with things

And you do have to weld it

 

You have to cut the first cat and weld it to the y pipe. I missed this fact when buying it.

Even with Thorleys you have to weld. Except they supply a flange and you weld that to your cat and then it bolts to the Ypipe flange.

I’m sure TRD long tunes had a similar setup where welding is required.

If you can get a picture of how close the crossover pipe is to the frame on the passenger side I’d appreciate it.

Blockdog is just being blackdog, I wouldn’t worry about it.

And yeah, it seemed really close. I was worried that the tube might make contact with the frame when the motor vibrates or moves on the mounts.

 

the way i did it and the way i recommend it is to undo the 6 body mount bolts and raise the whole body 3-4". this gives you way better access to the header studs and you can get them off easily.

took me probably longer than 8 hours after i removed the 7 broken studs in head...

 

Wow. That’s a big fear of mine. Broken studs in the head...

Did you soak them in a penetrating oil several times before you did this?

And how corroded were they?

 

they were soaked multiple times over multiple days. and heated up with map gas torch after i snapped first couple.

they actually werent that corroded.

had to drill them through completely and weld nuts on them. this is easy to do on passenger side but not so much on the drivers side. youl need a very stubby drill.
