What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Hoping these fixes my creaky noises when turning slowly, probably won’t get to put them in until Friday or Saturday.

 

Are you boosted? I have an AFR gauge and it'll read as rich as low 11s under WOT and heavy boost/load.

 

Creaky noises when turning slowly? That would almost certainly be uniballs and not spherical bearings on the shocks.

 

Guarantee torque wrenches are used everyday to remove bolts... ask me how I know.

Or just take apart your switch and clean the contacts. I've done this many a time with other vehicles over the years.

 

Oh I get that. I've done it myself, recently- because I didn't feel like digging to the bottom of my truck box to get the breaker.

I have GOT to do something about organization.

 

Diff carrier bearing replacement? Does this require a full setup of lash and everything on this sort of axle?

 

This is the type of DIY I fucking love to see.

I forgot he was turboed...in that case @Reh5108 you should not be relying on the AFRs your ECU is reading, you should get a wideband AFR gauge installed that reads off of an aftermarket O2 sensor welded in just before the cats. Using the Torque app to monitor your AFR the ECU reads under boost is not an accurate way to read them.

My torque app will read AFRs in the low 13s but my Wideband gauge will read low 11s at WOT and ~6psi

 

This weekend I installed TC cam tab gussets and Solo lower control arms. Was a hell of a project. Turned out great though.

 

You'll be real close to the correct settings if you put everything back to it's same settings. Mine was right on after pinion and side bearing replacement. Put I small pin punch mark on the side carrier bearing adjusting nuts helps.

 

Finally, we found it!

We took it all in. We enjoyed every minute. It had been a true Indiana Jones style adventure - one where we'd known what we were looking for, but not where to find it. One of those rare places that the Internet alluded to but never actually divulged the exact location. And in the end, I think that's what makes it so special...

Thank you sir. I am about to do R&P on my D44 for the SAS S10, so thought I'd get an idea how this one will compare. I will eventually be SASing the Tacoma, still haven't determined if I will stick with the Toyota rear axle or go with a D44. I already have a set of D44s available (sitting in my back yard) and am a big fan of using "standard" parts (that is to say, same axles across my builds).

I need to learn more about the Toyota axles, first, before I make my decision. If the Toyota axle is demonstrably stronger than the D44, yes, it will stay- especially since the lug patterns already match.

OK so not "what have I done today", but what am I planning, today-

A headache rack. But not the geegaw you normally see on a truck that will never carry equipment, and not so much for rear window protection, as I don't intend to do any logging or the like with this truck...

rather, it would be permanently mounted in the same fashion as a normal headache rack, and I'd build a crossbar of the same height to go on the end of the bed, which will tie into my unistrut load system (can post pics of that if need be). This will give me a modular rack system to carry my kayak, while not having to be on the truck all the time.

I got the idea from a Ford Ranger in the area. The guy is a volunteer Firefighter, and his is made of aluminum extrusions. It provides a good location to mount his fore and aft work lights, antenna, and strobes. I don't need the strobes, but think this might be a viable solution for a roof rack. Anyone seen or done similar?

EDIT- or hell, I could just build a knockdown bed rack, and leave it up for most of the time. Decisions....

 

After reading mixed reviews on replacement locking tailgate handles, I came up with this cheap & easy alternative. Installed a rotating padlock hasp on the inside of the tailgate, and loop a cable lock through it and the factory bed tie down. Not completely secure, but much better than no lock. I found one side to be sufficient, but both sides could be done if you wanted to. I have a camper shell with a locking rear window, so this set up is not exposed to the elements.
