Frame rust recall

Check it out. Mechanic was really nice, walked me around the old frame, new frame, engine, transmission, etc. I feel he erred on the side of keeping parts that were fine and only doing work/replacing parts that were necessary. He's going to replace the tension pulley, upper control arms. Great experience at Sanford, NC Toyota.

 

dropped my truck off this past monday...hopefully this replacement goes well.

 

Dealer called today to say they had all the parts. Truck gets the frame replaced on the 18th of April.

 

I’ve put 10k on mine since frame was done and no issues at all.
The tech that did mine was awesome I could go around back and just walk in.
They were good with parts I bought etc.
Trucks like new again!

In 2015 I had my 2007 inspected at 2 dealerships and they did not find a perforation. They wanted to apply the CRC but I declined as I read online that is was a drippy mess. Fast forward to 3/29/19 at 3 am... for whatever reason I could not sleep so I started cleaning my desk, going through all the papers on it. I found the notice and saw that my last day for inspection was 12 years from the date of first service. The day of first service was 3/29/07. Today was my last day! So I went online to my dealers website and made a 7 am appointment for an inspection. At 8 am I was told that it failed and I would be getting a new frame! They kept the truck and said worst case would be a month wait for the frame (does that sound about right?). I was also told that this is a good time to replace things like struts and shocks as they would be installed for free as part of the frame replacement. I just had to pay for the parts. I purchased Bilstein 5100's for the front and rear to have installed. My Truck only has 52,000 miles on it so I do not think I need to replace anything else (any suggestions?). I plan on having the front struts set at 1.75 and will add a 1" Billet Rear Lift block with new U-Bolts. That should level out the Truck. I hope the dealer will install the lift for free also because all those parts will be taken apart and put back together. Does anyone know what the limits are of what they will do for free and what they wont?

 

Ok...I just found out last week that my 2010 is eligible for the frame replacement program. The dealer has ordered the parts and said it will take about 8-10 weeks for everything to show up.

I don’t have time to peruse 174 pages of stuff on this. I do have a couple of questions. I asked them about replacing the shocks while they are in there...they said they would replace the rear shocks gratis as long as I bought them and a half hours labor each side for front shocks. They recommended Bilstein 5100’s and also mentioned for the front to buy a “quick coil” setup...does that make sense?

The Tacoma is almost completely stock and I’m not interested in any kind of lift in the future.

To those that have had this done, what else would you recommend. The truck has 123K miles on it. I mentioned possibly having the water pump changed out while they have the motor exposed but they said the motor will stay in the body so it’s not really something that would be easier to do while they have the truck apart.

Thoughts...suggestions?

I’m guessing by quick coil they may be talking about the coil being already assembled on the shock?
But there shouldn’t be any charge if it’s all assembled I’d think.

The lower intermediate steering shaft is a good thing to do this should be included in my opinion but wasn’t when mine was done. I’ve flushed my fluids so I know they were good but if they are leaving your motor in the engine bay not all fluids get flushed. So doing fluids if your not doing them yourself or having it done somewhere else. May want to mention that your pretty sure from what you’ve read ac should have been done, coolant, ps, auto trans, and brake fluid also.

The sky is the limit depending how anal you are with your truck.
I did rear shocks, body mounts, sway bar bushings, PS rack hoses and tie rods inner and outer, lower intermediate steering shaft also.
They include hard lines attached to frame so brake lines and auto trans if it is a auto with fluid change I’d think.
They also do new lower control arms. Wish I’d gotten new upper control arms and bushings when it was being done.
Aside from what I purchased from either Amazon or EB south Toyota parts they charged me like 130$.

My dealer was more than happy to work with me but I also made him aware they were not following the Toyota procedures.
Pretty sure the motor stays with the frame according to the book!
Mine stayed in the engine bay also.

I only have 52,000 miles on my 2007 and have never had any steering problems. Should I still replace this part? I found an aftermarket for $50. Also you mentioned the power steering hoses, never had any problems with that also.

Energy Suspension 8.5140R Sway Bar Bushing set. I also would like to replace the drivers front differential bearing with the upgraded Toyota part as I am told that could be a potential problem with a lifted truck.

The lower intermediate steering shaft has been an issue for lots.
I don’t think it’s a mileage thing but rust. For me it was both.
The joint that binds is visible driver front wheel well.

I had my needle bearing done after the frame. Complained to dealer I didn’t remember it doing it before. Honestly I didn’t.
Dealer cut me a deal and did it in a afternoon.

Had my steering shaft, shocks and struts done with the frame. No labor charge!
I was having some binding issues while steering. So it was a no-brainer.

 

Did you use an OEM part for the steering shaft? The aftermarket ones are so much cheaper but I do not know if they will install an aftermarket.

They shouldn't charge any labor.

 

Stopped by the dealer today and took a good look under my truck. Lower steering shaft looks great, Fuel straps and exhaust have some minor surface rust only so I think they are good. Other than the frame everything else looks OK and not needing replacement. So shocks & struts, 1" billet lift in rear, body mounts and sway bushings, and upgraded toyota drivers front differential bearing.

 

When you pick your truck up go over it carefully.Bed alignment,lights,and loose parts hanging down!!!

 

The dealer also over tightened the front wheel so much that it destroyed a six month old rotor.They also installed the wheel well liner on the outside of the mud flap.It took me a long time to figure out the noise!!

 

Used OEM. Didn't check out anything else.

Did Toyota supply the part or just install it for free?
I bought mine but install was free.
