I've read the owner manual on how to break in the engine, and now I'm wondering if there is any maintenance I should be doing after my first 1k miles. I didn't see anything specific in the owners manual and I haven't picked up the maintenance guide yet. Also I looked at the maintenance thread on here and didn't see anything specific to break in maintenance. Is there anything I should do and if so when should it be preformed?

I would do what the manual says. You'll see a few come on here that say change your oil after 1000 miles or 5,000 miles etc...which is not necessary according to the manual.

Nothing specific to do, but its a good idea to check your lug nuts, all your fluids and things like that which you should be checking regularly anyway. Even the 6 months/5k service is nothing out of the ordinary.

I kept it under 4,000 rpm for the first 1100 or so miles....then ive hit redline 2-3 times since...i dont drive it like i stole it but dont try and baby it anymore either. Had it up to close to 100 also for a decent distance as well. I am at 3600 and will change oil every 5,000 and use supertech synthetic....everyone has their favorite I use to use Mobile One but I cannot tell a difference and save a ton of money plus the blackstone testing has proven it is good oil.

Guys this is a pickup truck with a mini van engine. No need to panic when it comes to engine break in.

Drive it hard after it's warmed up. Change the oil at about 50 miles, then again at 1000... then 10,000. :crapstorm:

If you are gonna disregard what Toyota engineers say, then do it right. OP, please change the oil at fifty mile intervals for the first 500 miles. Then every one hundred miles for the next 500 miles, then every 1,000 miles forever. That's my recommendation if we are writing our own maintenance plan. That's 114 oil changes in 100K miles. That should cover it...

I agree. Also dont forget to swap the air in your tires every 3rd oil change so it doesnt get contaminated from the rubber.

Replace the rear diff oil after break-in (500 miles). The rear diff oil doesn't have a filter like the engine and transmission.

Change the oil around 3k, then go for the 1st oil change at 10k. I had some light metal at 3k miles on the break in oil.

What if you have Nitrogen filled tires? I heard you can go to 10k miles on that.

And where was the metal found? The filter I presume. There will be some shavings, but the filter will do its job.

Honestly I only used nitrogen filled once so I didn’t have to change it. The one time I used it I had to air down to get over a parking curb and my voice got really deep. Scared the crap out of me. I made it over the curb and filled with air when I got home.

Should have used helium, I can hop any curb at the mall with no problem in my 2wd with all 4 tires filled with Helium.

Flakes in the drain pan, I'm not sure if it came from the filter housing or the oil pan. Just glitter. Nothing to be concerned about.
