Roof top tents yay or nay?

Ran a Tepui for 6 years and now I'm running the Alu-Cab Expedition Gen III and I'll always have an RTT. Got the Alu-Cab to simplify setup/takedown and for less wind resistance and ability to load stuff on top of it. I'll never look back.

if you want to call installing full suspension on a 4 runner, leafs and shocks on three tacos, and long travel on another, and skids on a 4runner, learning how to change oil and setting up tent, you are like you honda friend on a Tacoma forum.

You could be more intelligent than me for all I know so I wont agree or disagree. Plus, you might be more intelligent in certain things whereas I might be in others.
As far as the "mod day" thing some people have to start somewhere. If you need to test your tent before mod day so you can set it up quicker than your buddies RTT I'm not judging you. Practice makes perfect. I understand how it can be comforting having one guy doing most the work while everyone rejoices around the free services. I get it.

 

If thats what you do sit around, it doesnt apply to everyone. everyone gets to work something you may be not accustomed to.

So what's the general thought on the new quilt liners coming out for the RTT? Part of me is curious, the other half of me feels like it won't help much. I do wonder if it'll address the two biggest things of camping in below 20* weather which is keeping the tent warm, and possibly keeping the frost down on the exterior. We all know how these things like to turn into tentcicles.

these and just pee from the tent into a bucket below, mitigating the fear of falling out of the tent while peeing, and overspray, and just replace the tubing each time. Just keep it away from friends who will try to to funnel beer out of your pee funnel.

No. It's not important. I was just trying to be funny. I love my tent and got it on the TW group buy so I don't feel cheated at all. Thanks for offering though.

Its also a 5' bed like mine. Do you have an idea to get around that? haha Im in the same boat. Thats why i went RTT, especailly if im camping with my gf. But tbh, even a 6' bed is pretty short, being over 6' and liking to stretch out, the RTT is just so luxurious. Is not made for boon docking though, im looking to do that for a few weeks between leases in june. Thoughts?

 

I'm more of a practical versus comfort kinda guy if it comes down to that choice! I'm 5'10 and I've laid in my 5' bed before. It was totally fine. A little sideways but I didn't see an issue if I had to sleep in it for a few days. I don't expect much comfort and I'm okay with it. If you don't already have a shell I don't know if I'd get one just to boondock unless you find something cheap. I personally wouldn't sleep in my shell for a few weeks between leases. Too long for me lol. Your call!

 

I think it'd work pretty good. AFAIK it works on the same principle as an underquilt on a hammock, where you're utilizing air pockets with insulation to keep the warm air from escaping.

 

Just in case a #2 strikes you? Though I think a 1.5 would travel down the funnel into the bucket easier.
