Yep. GMRS channels are just about the same thing as the UHF channels for Ham. I've never used GMRS at any big power, but I've used the UHF up there and it works well enough.

Like I said though, just needs other people also using GMRS. Would be a good option

I'm understanding that GMRS is taking over what CB was, anyways, so basically CB is dead outside of trail stuff.

Thanks, I don't want to be an antenna farm with ridiculous antennas poking out of everywhere. Not looking at it as a hobby, more as a tool.

I'm not sure about that. Could be. Who knows. A lot of group rides up here use CB. Thus I have one. The I hop on my Ham to talk to the front of the pack and joke with them. Haha kidding.

Basically it's 3 things for me. Watts. What I can get the best antenna on, and environment. But the ultimate factor is if I have GMRS and everyone is on CB, I'm taking to myself haha

I think you'd be fine with CB and GMRS if you can get people In your group to us GMRS

You're overthingking things. If you get $70 license you can use GMRS for yourself, and your family...it's easy, breezy, beautiful, covergirl sort of shit...There is a mW issue with FRS. But if you get a GMRS only radio you can use 40+ watts! Killing the usual frs/gmrs horseshit.

Some already have CB, and others also have GMRS. Getting back on subject, how do you optimise GMRS RX and TX? Is it just watts or, like my MXT275 and it's teeny-tiny antenna, does that matter too? What is gain specifically and how does it apply to selecting the appropriate antenna? On our trucks, mounting antennas to the roof is optimal for ground plane, but how does that apply to a GMRS radio antenna? I'm new and I don't know what's adjustable in this frequency range.

Edit: again autocorrect is messing with my words, I've edited for clarity

I'll have to dive back into the book, it is GMRS restricted on mods regarding aftermarket antennas? I don't use it so I haven't looked it up recently

If it's a magnet antenna toss it in the center of a flat sheet of metal.

It's restricted on height, but nothing beyond that, that I know of.

    But can I get better?

You're asking questions that demand a particular answer. Antenna, Antenna, Antenna! In any radio system the the Antenna system is the MOST IMPORTANT thing. Regardless of what communications system you adopt, a proper antenna is key. With UHF (GMRS) it is a bit less important than using a CB (HF). You can use your current radio and antenna, and have great results.

I am probably overthinking it, but still want an awesome setup. I'm not trying to be a pain, just really trying to get the best bang-for-buck setup.

With GMRS you are allowed to us external antennas.

That's more in line of what I was worried about. For CB it's so critical, and now dealing with higher frequencies I was worried of having a crap setup. I just want to talk, man lol
