No offense but your rack is starting to look like a prinsu rack.

Or maybe you're just too dumb to realized that you're actually dumb because you're too dumb to think you're dumb because maybe somehow you are dumb and just too dumb to admit you're dumb?

He's not making a broach. He's making a roof rack. How many ways can you differentiate a hammer from another hammer? A baseball from another baseball? How many ways can you differentiate one roof rack from another roof rack? He shouldn't have to add unnecessary divergent design flourishes only because some deem it necessary. It appears to me that the man is about to build a better mouse trap, one that will be marketable to a broad spectrum of truck owners, not just us. And he's just getting started in the product development. Give him some room. The man is grasping the American Dream. As Billy Gibbons said, "Let that boy boogie-woogie!"

Nice @bonnfabrication , make a thread and I'll follow your journey too. I found some things I need to tweak a bit so this exercise was good!

@OriginalMan @tonykarter Good point tony, yes the absolute minimal pieces of metal that can make a roof rack will inevitably end up close to a Prinsu or what I've done. Form follows function.. all the time. I'll challenge you to design one that does not resemble another one in any way and lets see what you come up with! @bonnfabrication is going to be faced with the same task so we'll see how his comes out.

@tonykarter It's funny you mention 'building a better mouse trap' because I literally did the product design on the world's first Wi-Fi enabled mouse trap (and rat traps) which you can find here: http://www.victorpest.com/smart-kill-electronic-mouse-trap-m1 and here: http://www.victorpest.com/smart-kill-electronic-rat-trap-m2 .

@RobP62 , Here come (some) answers!

    1. I believe that is just the camera angle. The ends of the rack go about an inch past the rear window.

    2. Yes the rack is cantilevered outside of the mounting holes. The OEM mount holes are about 42" apart from each other, and the rack's outermost side rails are 48.375", 48" inside and .375" for material thickness.
    3. Support brackets will be 3" flange tabs formed (bent metal) from the main side pieces. They will be bent at 90 degree angle.
    4. Yes from seeing several racks and crossbar setups the crossbars I have now and mounts on each crossbar should be able to support at least 230lbs. Nothing should be flexing up there.

    5. The offset distance will be equal (or as close as possible) at the OEM mount locations. I will have to play with some aluminum spacers in order to really get her 'stanced' right. Obviously, it wont be sitting flush as the cardboard is now.

    6. I do have a very small radius on that pointed front where the fairing ends. I can take a look at adding a tiny flange to eliminate that as I go forward.

You make a good point with snow, I had never thought about that until now. Good question! It appears I'll have about 3" under the crossbars.. but I can measure and check. The Plano cases are typically mounted with a T Nut, which doesn't protrude underneath the bottom most edge of the crossbar, so it shouldn't make anything get closer to your sunroof.

    Good R&D questions!

I searched USPTO and could not find any patent for Prinsu. Apparently CBI Offroad bought Prinsu, but I cant confirm that. CBI is a vendor on here. So.. 1+1 that

I dont get it either. Another thread got shut down cause the guy was selling a ‘looks like’ Prinsu style rack. Which is like any basic metal RR

@RobP62 Here is a shot of the flange with a keyslot for the bolt, and washer underneath the bolt's head, and then an aluminum spacer beneath the flange (that spacer height may change, it's something I'll need to fiddle with after I have the rack made). Hope this helps you visualize it a bit more!
