St Maxx vs Duratrac construction and weight

I called my local Discount Tire today to order a set of 255/75/17 ST Maxx C load tires and was helped by a very nice guy on the phone. He asked me a couple of questions and suggested I consider the Goodyear Duratrac in 265/70/17 as it was lighter and less expensive.

My question is not about which is the better tire but there is about 8lbs difference between the two with them both being c load.

Is the St Maxx that much more heavily constructed?

I was sold on the Coopers but that's a lot of weight...

 

In my opinion from reviews I've read, the Duratracs will be louder. No complaints with my St Maxx's.

The sidewall on the ST Maxx is stronger

 

My 255/75/17 duratracs are pretty quiet. My old Coopers were great tires no complaints. The sidewall is great. I have flats with both...

A screw is gonna do, what a screw is gonna do.

Also, the thicker wall tire will have more road vibration transfer. My coopers ran rougher than the duratracs do.

 

What Coopers did you have?

 

I'll 2nd what all others here have said about the ST Maxx. Heavy, yes. Rough riding, yes. But a really strong tire. No flats here after 30k miles of hard wheeling.

 

Bingo. I had 285/75/16 Duratracs and they were nearly as loud as MTs and just as rough.

I recently switched to Cooper XLTs in the same size (and still load E because 16” life), and the difference between them is night and day. S/T series will obviously be more aggressive, but I wouldn’t think twice about going with the Cooper tire over the Goodyear.

 

I'm not really a fan of Goodyear tires in general and hadn't considered the Duratrac before he suggested it. Realistically though I'm on road a lot more than off.

If anyone has had both I'd be very interested in your experiences with noise, ride, and mileage between the two.

I think I'm gonna have to give the Maxx a try though or I'll have doubts...

 

Check my thread for XLT pics. I know they’re not as aggressive (I hate it), but I can’t praise their road manners enough. My girlfriend will ride in my truck again, too.

 

Yea, Cooper has a 45 day free test ride so I thought I'd give the ST Maxx a shot for a few weeks and if I didn't like em the AT3 LT in a C rated 265/70/17 was my plan B.

 

255/85/16 ST Maxx here. Found the sweet spot in psi between rough ride and sidewall roll. They wear well, and are surprisingly quiet.
Yes, screws/nails/wrenche/rebar can puncture when you drive over them just like any other tire. But, they do well at driving over rocks/branches/sage brush stumps in my experience.
If you get them, play with the psi a bit if the ride is rough or if it feels squishy in turns.

 

My neighbor has the C rated tires and they look good too. Not as aggressive as the XLT, but he loves them. I’m sold on Coopers.

Im running Coopers, 255/80/17 Maxx E ply. Yes they are heavy but i still average 16.5 mpg, and not a puncture....yet. Im at the point of tire shopping again. I got 40k miles out of this set. I consider that great for an aggressive all terrain.
Also had the same on my old Taco. Plan on putting some on the wifess 4Runner. I'm definitely sticking to Coopers.

 

Mine is 34 front 33 rear when empty. 34 front, 37 rear when towing. Yours may be different.

I like the ride of the skinnys and the on/off road performance. They aren't nearly as loud as i though they'd be. If they were 265 or 285's though it would be alot worse i imagine.

 

I just had Discount Tire order the ST Maxx

 

I have the 255/75/17 good year duratracs. 23k and still 75% tread. I'd have a hard time going with a different make or size.
