Forgot about a conversation I had this weekend when I was on the Whiskey hunt: Went to the Bottle Shop in Columbus, GA (awesome store by the way) and was talking to their whiskey guy. He said that a good customer of his was telling him about a liquor store that had been around the area for a really long time and had changed hands sometime recently. Supposedly, they have a bottle of Blanton's from 1984, no letters on the horse stopper. Owner said he entertain offers of 2k or more.

I've never understood that, paying more for a bottle just because it's old (unless it's a rare blend that isn't easy to find/can't be found any more). It's not like it improves at all once it's in the bottle; the aging is all done as soon as they seal that cork. :notsure:

Pretty sure in this case whoever forks over 2 large for a bottle of Blanton's is doing it as a showpiece. More of a "Check out what I got" kind of deal. IIRC that's the first year of production for them. Hell, what do I know, maybe somebody would pop it open.

@bvbull200 have you cracked that 2019-01 yet? I'm not sure if I missed it here... I'm eagerly awaiting your review - given that you're our resident Booker's expert

Looking forward to reading your thoughts!

The guy at my local liquor store knows that I like the good stuff as I am always asking him what they have hidden. Well today, when I walk in, he offers me a bottle of Kentucky Owl "Confiscated" Bourbon for $150. I declined because I don't know anything about it and $150 is a little high on a unknown(to me) bottle. After reading a little, I may go back and get it.
Anybody have any insight for me??

For a lot of bottles, this is exactly why people pay so much for them. I know the whiskey was meant to be consumed, but, at a point, when a bottle is still around, it is worth more (even intrinsically) as a collector's item than it is as a cure for sobriety. It's like a trading card or piece of artwork.

I have this bottle of Seagram's VO from 1979. Not as valuable as that Blanton's, but still cost a bit more than its contemporary. I bought it to gift to my parents' on their upcoming 40th anniversary.

    20180227_075011.jpg

    20180227_075024.jpg

I know it's just Seagram's, but it has a bit of history with the family. For a long time, Seagram's 7 has been a go-to on my dad's side of the family. I've drank plenty of 7 & 7s myself. When my parents or grandparents had a few extra nickels in their pocket, they'd spring for the Seagram's VO. There is a really good chance that, on my parents' wedding night, there were bottles just like this one - with the same tax strip on them - being served to the guests.

This will be really cool to look at for about 10 minutes until it almost certainly gets opened. :D

I have not. Only got it home a couple days ago ;).

I have a lot of open Booker's that I'd do well to move over to the stack of empties, but I'll try to get you a review this weekend :).

Ok, so on that note, I've got a bottle of Jim Beam Duck Stamp series circa 1983.

Worth anything? Not that it will be for sale

Wow, I imagine that's gotta be worth a pretty penny given the limited bottling. That's damn cool, thanks for sharing.

$75-150, probably. Box looks like you'd expect being 35 years old, but the fill level on that bottle is really good, so it's probably towards the higher side. I just looked up a few and found an auction as low as $50 (that person got a steal) and some private sales for upwards of $140. I don't know enough about the history of that bottle to distinguish exactly why some might command more than others. That's in the neighborhood of what that Seagram's VO cost me, though I bought it a while back and can't remember specifically.

Really cool bottle! I'd show that thing off for sure.
