I took my 18 in today and they refused to fix it because of the after market grill.

Do they have to remove the grill? The dealership I use is pretty cool as I have a OEM Pro grill and garnish I should be good. One way or another they are going to fix it. Either now or when its traded and goes through their service dept.

Just talked to my service writer and per Toyota anything lifted or a change in the grill the recall can not be done and the customer can pay to have the pre collision turned off. I got this from two dealerships. The one I bought it from and the one I use for service. I think I will leave it alone, It works fine.

Which brings me to my earlier question. What if the dealer installed the lift before the sale? They do this a lot in my area.

I'm sure dealers are on the phone with Toyota Motors North America right now trying to get a resolution to this. I bet in a few months something else will come out of Toyota on this issue.

Did you try the radar override function of the cruise control? If not, just hold the cruise on switch in for a few seconds when turning on the cruise... that will allow standard non radar cruise control to function.

So I’m guessing it will all depend on the dealer?? I put in a aftermarket pro grill and I also installed raptor lights...should I disconnect the lights before taking it in? I wouldn’t want them to break my stuff!

Took mine to the dealer for 15k mile service and they told me about the recall. Dealership replaced the part instead of trying to fix anything. and i wasn't showing any signs of a defective part

I was wondering what they would say if you had installed an aftermarket grill or even a pro grill on a non pro model. It is a safety issue and I guess the dealers don't want the liability should there be an issue after the fix is installed. I can see law suits if the thing malfunctioned and caused injury. Injured person's lawyer would assert the dealership was negligent in preforming the work and the dealership's lawyer would say the problems was the modified grill. In this case I'd see the injured person prevailing as they would say the dealership should have known better. Of course this is all conjecture.

So now I wonder; will the fix, assuming it's done on a OEM standard grill, make changing out the grill to an aftermarket or even OEM pro grill more difficult or even undable?

One point that keeps coming up about the dealerships denying warranty (on any issue)... It seems to me they have more of an incentive to do warranty rather than look for ways to deny it as they are reimbursed by Toyota. Maybe the reimbursement isn't enough to make such work profitable.. IDK, but they do get paid.

Mine is schedule for next week. Maybe I'll chat with the service guy if he's in a talkative mood.

Well I'm pissed . Lithia Toyota Redding will not do the Recall due to a Pro Grill and Leveling Kit. I'm going to get in touch with another Dealer .

Good luck, my service manager said just wait a little while longer as the field rep thinks that it's going to be lifted so we might see these recalls fixed. I personally don't care, mine is working correctly. They will have to deal with it if I trade it in. Fix it now or fix it later.

Just a recommendation for those that modify their vehicles... notify your insurance company of all modifications to protect yourself against potential liability issues post accident. Doing so will also allow for R&R of those modifications (at least with my insurance company):

That's where I'm at. Just seems kinda lame after spending good money on a Tacoma to get a run a round. I'm over it . Just ranting. I'm actually thinking if molding my own shield to cover it.

I have some flat plastic and I can heat it up and mold it. I can also make a clay mold of the sensor and then pop the mold off, then lay the plastic and heat it up. It's not hard however I'm trying to score a cover from the parts Dept.

You can buy the "cover" pretty easily online. But your truck will still show an open recall if, for example, you go to sell it and the prospective buyer looks up the VIN. And the dealer won't have reprogrammed / diagnosed and replaced your sensor.

That doesn't concern me at all. Eventually I will get it done. The covers are already on line?
