3rd Gen HID vs LED vs Halogen H11 projector headlights

Lows, I’d get XD Phillips 4300k HID’s if they were still available or the Morimoto 3800k H11 bulb possibly.

Highs, I’d leave alone with the stock H9’s unless a better than stock option is found and add driving lights. I went cheap with Hella 700’s and 100w bulbs, but the HID conversion is pretty well documented.

Or, If the Morimoto LED projectors turn out to be amazing maybe just go with those?

 

Is there any data on the RX350 retrofit? Couldn't find any here searching. Would be interesting to see how a retrofit compares to best performing halogens.

 

No comparison, a proper retrofit will be brighter. RX350 are largely regarded as the best, as they are OEM Toyota/Lexus. You need to find a retrofitter that offers the RX350 projectors as an option. The halogen lighting upgrades, even with the best bulbs will be in the mid-upper 2000 lumens range. HIDs are 3200 lumens and won't suffer the shorter lifespan the halogens experience by pushing them so hard. The key is getting a proper quality retrofit done using quality components. I would suggest OEM brand Denso ballasts and OEM grade Philips or Osram HID capsules. All this will likely cost near $1000 though, vs $15 for some Philips bulbs and potentially $50 for a voltage booster.

 

I wonder if this adapter would fit behind the dust cap on the 4Runner headlamps. The 4Runner has a weird setup.

 

Is there a reliable source for the Philips German H9s?

And, can you use the H9s for both low beam (with tab removal modification) as well as the high beam?

 

You can pull the dust cap off and look to see if it appears there is room to squeeze the 2 connectors down below the bulb. On other vehicles I've see with the external dust cap I think it would work, but I have not evaluated the T4R.

Still looking at that. I thought I had it with the ACDelco labeling, but someone else got Osrams when they ordered them, but maybe that is just an ACDelco Canada thing. If you search ebay for 'ACDelco H9 bulb' and look at images that display the actual bulb you are buying, not a stock photo, bulbs with the blue back are Philips. Like these linked below. Osram has a black back with red print. While Philips might sell China and German bulbs interchangeably in their standard consumer bulb line, it seems highly unlikely any OEM is going to use a Chinese halogen bulb, and ACDelco is GMs OEM brand.

The German Philips H9 is what the 3rd Gen Tacoma already uses as the stock high beam.

 

The GM part numbers are different!!! We ordered different GM part numbers for the H9s and it looks like those different part numbers are different bulb manufactures.

These are just photos I found online showing the bulbs out of the box with the part number, but I thought it was really strange all the images I was seeing for the GM ACDelco were Philips, but you got Osram H9s. There is a chance I could be incorrect of course, but it would explain why I didn't see any Osram bulbs under the ACDelco part number I was looking at.

I asked for 92095788 but the parts counter told me that part number has been superceded by 10351666.

RockAuto maps both part numbers to the same product. I have 4 on the way from RockAuto, should be here on Friday. Will let you know what they turn out to be.

I have quite the collection of bulbs now! Wife is starting to ask questions. I am telling her it is all in the interest of Science, and I plan to keep the truck for 15 years.

Hopefully I will be able to borrow lux meter this weekend, it is being used for qual testing this week.

 

If the part number has been superseded, then GM must have went from using Philips H9s to using Osram H9s, which is disappointing. ACDelco had very good pricing on the Philips compared to Toyota's completely absurd pricing for the German Philips using Toyota part# 9098113084. You can still find ACDelco German Philips on ebay though, but I'd like to find a better source than ebay to point people to.

 

You should be able to stuff the adapter down behind the dust cap. Pretty sure it won't be a problem. I swapped out my T4R OEM low beam for the GE130 and there is some extra room in there.

 

Darn was in Germany maybe I should have stopped by parts store and picked up a bunch of locally made bulbs...

 

My Philips H9 bulbs, that I ordered from the Amazon link that crashburn80 provided were made in Germany.

 

The Hikari looked good....I didnt want fans or parts that could fail so I went with Beamtech H11 https://www.amazon.com/BEAMTECH-Hea...06XHDYTGL/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 For the money I like them alot. I know there are higher wattage H11 LED but I did not want to spend the extra money and these are brighter than stock at least with a good color and in the fogs the wide pattern of light is awesome at night.

 

I'll be there in a few weeks. I'll have to check out an autoparts store.

 

It would be interesting to see what they carried in general, since here Sylvania seems to have a monopoly on the autoparts stores bulb supply.

to preach to the choir, the morons that run LEDs as low beams are for sure going to ruin aftermarket/ modding for everyone the day some smart lawyer can pin an accident on them as the root cause. So dangerous. I live in the country and so many morons around me put them in their 6" body lifted duallies, I have to literally pull off the road because I can't see.

Not an issue to blinding oncoming drivers in projectors, but in reflector low beams it is a completely different story.
