Upgrading Steel Wheels to Aluminum questions

I've got 2016 SR with steel wheels. I'll need new tires before next winter. I was thinking of upgrading my wheels to aluminum and I see a lot of Tacoma wheels with newish tires available on Craigslist from about $400 - $1200 for sets of 4. I gather the lug nuts are different? Are the TPMS different? Are center caps interchangable? Any other issues I should know about? I see a lot of this style wheel available.

Yep, lug nuts and center cap are different. I was able to use the TPMS from my steel wheels. They have to be turned 180 degrees to fit, but I’m in my second set of tires with no issues. Not sure where you live, but I bought a set of TRD OR wheels that had been on the truck for a year when the owner upgraded. I only paid $125 for 4 wheels, center days and lug nuts.

i did the same thing your gonna , i had regular steel wheels on my 2016 tacoma access cab truck i got new tires also when i got new aluminum rims. i got the gray oem toyota tacoma rims with center caps, and brand new tires. i had to get the alloy rim lug nuts, got them off ebay from a seller , brand new, also brand new tpms sensors, my brother in law works in a garage and he uses these universal type tpms sensors, he just programs the code into each one and there as good or better than the toyota ones, dont remember the name of them, but i spent $300 for the bare rims and caps from a seller on ebay, they were dealership take offs,$62 for the lug nuts, $40 for each sensor, and $500 for the falken tires hope this helps you

This helps a lot. What keywords should I be looking for to get the right lug nuts?

 

I picked up a set of 4Runner alloy lug nuts for $5 from this app "offerup". I've seen Tacoma ones for $10. The alloy lug nuts have a flat washer unlike the acorn style steel wheel lug nuts.

If you change your tpms you’ll have to get new ones programmed to your truck also part of the reason I’ll change rims when my tire wear out

 

I guess If I'd thought about it that it would be obvious that they would need some sort of power supply but it hadn't actually crossed my mind that they had batteries. Shows what I know.

 

I was told by discount tire that they only could program certain brands may wanna see where you can go to get them programmed before your hunting down somewhere to program them They told me to pickup the sensor from O’reillys but I ended up spraying my steelies for temp fix till I can get everything I want one time

 

The TPMS sensor from our 2010 4Runner was just replaced last month. Lasted 9 years! I replaced it with Denso sensors for $36 a piece of Amazon.

The TPMS sensors on my 10 year old Tundra were still working when I traded it in. On the 8 year old Highlander too. Think you'll get more then 5 years out of them.

 

The rims in your pic are from a 2nd gen and will fit on your 2016. and as stated above, you will need to purchase new TPMS sensors and lug nuts. Those rims may back date your truck, but if you like them, then who cares right! there are also plenty of deals on a 16+ set of Sport and OR wheels that can be had with tires taken off from new trucks that upgrade.

 

Are you in an area where they apply heavy road salt ?
The clear coating peeled off my factory wheels and trashed the alluminum and I tried hard to keep them clean .
Doesnt help that its 50 below zero for 7 months of the year up here where I live .
Car wash is closed when it gets to 20 below

 

Since I'm not in any rush I'll probably just keep a watch for a good deal to come along. I assume the is not a problem switching from 16 - 17" rims as long as the tires are appropriate for the rim?
