Ok, coming out of Land Cruisers, and new to Tacos, I have to ask, is the center diff locked on these? If not, seeing as the front and rear diffs are open (not locked rear), what is causing the bind? Doesn’t the open diff setup allow for different turning radii?

I’m wearing asbestos, so set me straight. :)

As long as you don’t do this on the boat ramp, you should be fine.

20% tint on all windows, Deckplate mod, satoshi-ish grille, blacked out and/or body matched emblems, rattle canned rims, red l.e.d. interior lights, bilstein 5100's and OME 881 coils , deaver 8 leaf pack, 1.5" lift shackle, alpine sound system, 55w HID lightforce 140 and 170 fogs
    It’s the transfer case.

Open diffs allow for left to right wheel speed differences, but don’t solve front to back differences.

Just to clarify, land cruisers have a third differential in the center, which allows AWD. They can then lock said 3rd differential, making it 4x4. That's where his confusion is coming from.

You may already know this but wanted to share it for others who may not.

We have all forget to disengage our 4 wheel drive . Once you get to know your truck you will feel it even on the straight aways . Try to be aware .

Thanks, I am Cruiser literate, and Tacoma illiterate.

Thanks AK, I think that answers my question. The binding is front to back, not left to right.

    Thank you!

^^^Man.......all this fear mongering from on high.

OP. Your truck’s drivetrain is tough. The bit of tire scrub you experienced is 1/1000ths of the strain put on the parts by the ABS system, traction control, rear locker (if fitted), and general engine torque when crawling the truck up and over something steep.

You did no measurable damage to your truck, and it is certainly designed to handle the effect of your goof up.

I have never heard of someone snapping a CV turning into a parking stall in 4WD, and you can most certainly do that out on the trails if you push the limits.

Sleep well tonight. The Toyota engineers have got your back.

It’s OK to leave it in 4wd all the time and around turns as long as you keep the hubs unlocked.

Oh, never mind.... just having another 80’s flashback :rasta:

I like a little extra play in case I leave it in 4WD on pavement. Stops my drivetrain from exploding.
