I picked the truck up in Dec 2018. They recommend 10k oil change. I’ve only put a little over 2k miles on the truck til now. How long should I wait before I change it?

    Thanks for any input!!

12 months or 10k miles, whichever comes first. Just go by what the manual says. Lots of opinions here. The dealer likes to do checks every 5k miles or 6 months, not really needed just a way to up-sell needless stuff to you.

Follow the manual or come up with your own routine, there is no right or wrong with oil service.

But all jokes aside, just go with the recommended intervals and specs, unless you do a lot of towing or agressive driving etc. Good luck fellow taco owner :canada:

I do the first change at 500 miles, then the 2nd at 5K. You'd be surprised at how much swarf and initial wear particles can be in oil after 500 miles from new.

If you have a new truck follow Toyota Care through your dealer. They cover the first 4 oil changes and tire rotations until 24 months.

My wife and I are both relatively low milage drivers. I'm going ask them to change my oil at the 6 month/5K miles service. Made the same request at the 6 month service on my wife's 2018 Camry and they did it with no questions asked. It didn't seem to be an unusual request for them. BTW, it only had about 3700 miles on it then.

I believe on your window sticker it states 5000 miles or 6 months. I am the same way very little mileage just back and forth to work.

Welcome to the forum:thumbsup:. I did my first oil change at 2k just for piece of mind in regards to engine break in. After that I followed the 10k or 12 month recommendation from Toyota, good luck with it. Let the modding begin, usually doesn't take long after purchasing to start lol! :spending:

    Stock and staying that way
4 services, 2 oil changes. They don't change the oil at 5k or 15k.

I changed the oil in my truck at 3,980 miles. After that I'm doing the 10k changes. I sent a sample of the first change to Blackstone, and it had a lot of metal in it. I posted the results if someone wants to search.

In all honesty I would not run to 10k, that is a personal choice of mine, while oil can do the distance these days, there are other things in the engine that may not like this.
Stop and go city driving is harder on your oil than freeway runs.

Just FYI. If we ain’t careful this thread will become a 10 alarm dumpster fire.

In the deep many many many many oil threads here, people have had their oil shipped out to be tested. Miliage and personally experience may vary, but they were in spec. And when all else fails, mfg recomendation is rule.

But everyone owns their own truck, so I agree it's up to the owner to execute oil changes to their own personal comfort level.

I called one out on the testing thing, it ain’t the holly grail.
Back when I worked for Suzuki USA we did the tests, after the oil was changed, not as an indicator of when to change. Yes, it was racing oil and we were racing bikes

Just like a caliper and screw driver,
It is a tool to be used.

Oil should always be done according to MFG specs at the most. My 15 says 5k, I run 5k at maximum for my oil changes.
