Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
got some dandy's here don't we? i've been actually hoping that smog tests will be implemeted in the future in Ohio. too many times i've been stuck behind someone with a freakin blue cloud coming out of the muffler...well, sometimes just a pipe in front of me damn near choking me out. the other type of vehicle i'd like to see off the road is the infamous smoking-diesel-huge-ass-truck that never ever hauls a trailer that needs 5" stacks. im sure everyone enjoys the cloud they leave in an intersection when they crank up the fuel programmer and do a super-cool, smokey, not really that fast takeoff from the light. i have heard that we don't have smog due to the lesser quality gasoline that is sold here. :notsure:

im on the fence as far as mechanical inspections go. i do think it's a good thing, but that depends on how strict these inspections are. (i have no idea what the inspection guidelines for a safe vehicle are) my thing is...how would any one person be able to really determine if a vehicle is mechanically sound or not? hell, the mechanics at the dealerships who make the cars don't know what's going on with them half the time it seems.

that being said...i would feel safer on the road knowing that there's not someone driving an '87 Escort with a total of 9 lug nuts still intact to hold all four tires to the car. or better yet, watching that loose piece of body trim flapping away in the wind in front of me...wondering if i will be lucky enough to have it break away and come smashing through my windsheild.

the Big Rigs are subject to safety inspections no matter what state they are in, right? is this Fed regulation? (PUCO) if it's a good thing for the trucks, probably a good thing for all the vehicles sharing the road with them.

the costs from what i have seen don't hinder my stance much. the powers that be have pissed away much more money on things that have no positive impact for myself or anyone i know. it seems our country only spends money when it will either help the rich, or the poor...of which i am neither...well, at least for now. i may be in the latter group in the near future...and i don't think i'm gonna be lonely there.

I am sure your state has a number you can program into your phone anytime you see that blue smoke!

You're advocating personal responsibility in a time when too many people expect others to do things for them. Common sense seems to be harder and harder to find and it's frustrating. It's not hard to take a look at a vehicle to make sure it is in safe working order but people are so damn "busy" watching TV and playing on their iPhones that they can't take the time to do what's right.

It'd be nice to live in a world when every individual cared about their impact on everyone/everything else but there are a lot of selfish people out there.

The inspections helped balance out the "head up the ass" syndrome.

Not that I've ever seen. I think the best we can do is 1800grabdui...they Prolly wouldn't appreciate me using that one. Haha. Seriously...it somewhat like mad max around these parts...if it runs, someone will hit the road with it. I live in a "wage depressed area" which I'm sure contributes to the problem.

Agreed, seems common sense and personal responsibility have taken a back seat nowadays.

As far as vehicle inspection, I never really gave it much thought, but it is apparent that people cannot be trusted to keep their vehicles in safe working order. I thought checking at LEAST brakes was important and should still be checked.

One of the main safety concerns right now is people talking on cell phones while driving, most states have laws against this but they are not enforced,or the penalties are too lenient. This too is a case of personal respondsability when driving that folks dont abide in,even when the Gov. has made Laws against it. I think NJ has a Law that this is illegal?

Exactly, this might be more dangerous than bald tires because of the frequency of people doing dumbshit like that,I think stiffer penalties for all those offences including bald tires, bad lights etc. the fines should be doubled or higher to offset the insurance costs that good drivers have to pay in thier premiums cause a-holes dont follow the rules.

Someone mentioned personal responsibility? California is ground zero for the lack of that human trait. In spite of mandatory auto insurance laws, 25% of the driver's in Ca drive without it. It's also reasonable to assume that if you drive without insurance you are also probably not licensed to drive either. Rather than vehicle inspections how about more emphasis on the drivers? Here are the stats from 6 years ago.

Another stupid move in my opinion. I've inspected cars for 30 years in NC and I've seen some really dangerous cars on the road. At the same time, there are some really stupid laws that make no sense...You have to wear a seat belt while you're driving, but your car doesn't have to have seat belts (or doors for that matter) to pass inspection. That's just dumb! But if you don't MAKE someone get there car checked out at least once a year, GUESS WHAT? They won't...most people don't know a ball joint from a hole in their @*$! but everybody wants to gripe about the guy whose wheel just fell off in the middle of the road and is blocking the morning commute. Emissions inspections are really a bunch of crap...anybody that wants to cheat emissions probably knows what they're doing anyway..the rest of the population has to put up with crappy cars that burn a MIL light everytime you slam the hood the wrong way. I say keep safety inspections for everybody and screw emissions!

Texting while driving is an art. :D

As for cell phones.. the first ones who should get the ticket are the friggin' cops. Today alone, both in NJ and NY (city and state both) I counted 32 police officers driving while using a cell phone. They tell us to pull over when we use them, they damn well better do the same.. :D

My personal favorites are the NYPD traffic.... "police".. on the cell phone while (very poorly) directing traffic at busy intersections in Manhattan. WTF?

And.. to get back on topic.. mechanical inspection... um.. if they were to really do this.. Ford would never be allowed on the road..

No mechanical inspections means no mechanical inspections.

If you want to break the law and open yourself up to being 100% liable and negligent should you hit someone, by all means have fun tinting your front windshield.

Front wind shield tinting is always a fail regardless of if you get inspected or not.

Please buy some damn sunglasses like everyone else so you don't kill someone in the rain at night. I value my life and I don't need people like you hitting me.

BTW - this last post is just the start of why I am NOT for the stopping of the inspections.

The law is still the law and illegal mods or unsafe mechnicals are still illegal. Just now there is no bi-annual inspection to check whether your vehicle is complying with the law.

The cops can still give you a ticket for anything that doesn't comply with the NJ vehicle code.
