One of the things that has taken the most getting used to with the Ram has been the power band. The torque is good, but coming from an Ecoboost meant that having to rev the motor took some getting used to. The first time towing good weight with it I was like "where's the power...where's the power...*shift* Oh, there it is!"
But that's an inherent trait of an OHC engine, so I'm super interested in what a modern pushrod can do.

I love my new truck but miss my Tacoma
I'm just going to say it again. There is absolutely no reason that a pickup truck has a 10 speed transmission!!! None

10 years ago, I'd agree with you 100%. I'm still not quite ready to own one, but I can see the benefits. If you start talking about efficiency, the closer you can get to keeping the engine at a constant, ideal RPM, the better off you will be (one of the ideals behind CVTs). And I'm not necessarily talking about MPGs, but overall operating efficiency, getting the most out of your engine. Think of a piece of heavy equipment, when they're working, you set the RPMs and hydraulic pumps regulate the actual movement but the engine is always operating in a narrow rpm band. Dyno's support this also, most engines have defined peaks but before, you lost so much with gear changes it wasn't worth it to have more gears, they were just cumbersome so you try to flatten out the curve instead. Personally, I think it makes more sense to let the engine run in its most efficient and powerful RPM range and let the tranny make sure it stays there.

I agree, but only where momentum and traction aren't a factor

When freighted and going up Killington I'd hate to go from 8th to 3-4 th instead of 5th to 3rd. Using the truck for work I really don't care for gearhunting and there's been times coming out of a hole or up a mountain while pulling, that if I didn't keep steady, deliverable power, while facing terrain that's could cause steady resistance, I'd have been dead in the water

Dam, I see folks that can NOT drive "Slush drives" and now you want to give them more gears to SMASH..:rofl::rofl:

I move 50-80,000 pounds everyday and multiple gear transmissions help this BUT if one needs to have automation...Allison does this with just 6 gears..... and it has "worked" forever.....

Eaton has "tried" to make an automatic and failed at almost every attempt....

Now this is just based on the "Large Car" side of life BUT Rob has a very legit question  WHY :confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

Ah, gotcha and I agree. If the tranny program is shit, doesn't matter how many gears you have, it's just going to suck.

For normal driving it's whatever. But right Now all trucks can do some extreme work . If large transmission trucks become the norm and that's all they make, there will be no trucks that can handle extreme work.

Anybody on here own a shop press? I have heard surprisingly good things about the 20 ton HF unit and considering picking one up. They get expensive quick so a sub-200 unit is ideal for me.

Looking for overall suggestions and just how much use the machine gets. It wouldn't be used a ton for me but I think the money may be well spent instead of always looking for a shop to do the job.

I have one that I picked up at the Big-E Swap meet years ago. It was the display unit and they let it go for $100.
It's one of those tools that sits and takes up space for the most part but it is there when you REALLY need a press. It has bailed me out many times.

    I could be totally wrong...

But for regular trucks, it's called locking out the gears. I did it on my ford, I do it on my taco and my brother does on his rebel ram. I'd bet you can do it on all the SD's out there as well.

For commercial big ass haulers...well a high range and a low range of gears which already exists (prob not their real names) and you already are working with 10-12 speed trannys. I know that's how the old big ass dumpers I used to drive were set up.

I sorta don't get the problem. It sounds like guys who hate v-6's cause they don't sound the same, even if they have more power, better mpg etc...

It's not even a matter of locking out gears anymore. I don't know about the Chevy, but the new Fords don't go though all 10 gears when you accelerate unless you're max loaded and the truck needs to. Unloaded, under normal acceleration, it will jump gears and act more like a 5 or 6 speed.

I haven't driven the new Ford/GM tranny so that is good to know.
