JBL Entune Premium upgrade issue

    This is a similar post to the one in New Members thread! 3rd gen 2018 Taco with a very disappointing JBL sound system! I just installed door speakers replacing that junk they call premium sound and now they cut out when listening to them at all levels. The higher the level, the faster it cuts out??? I’m sure it has to do with the factory amp but I’m not sure??? I think I’m going to install a PAC Amp Pro
    $315 AP4-TY12 Amppro 4 Amp Interface (Select 2012-2018 Toyota(R) & Lexus(R) Vehicles with Jbl(R) or Premium Amplified Sound Systems), 1 Pack
    AP4-TY12 interface and install my amp and subs from my old truck?? Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas about this issue because it’s very annoying to an audiophile!!! Please help???

    You (most likely) installed 4ohm speakers, and the factory are 2ohm speakers. This means the amp is running double-time to try and push the new speakers. It gets exhausted, and cuts out. This si why you see so many "Gut the JBL" threads.

    The AmpPro is an awesome product and highly recommended!

    Doesnt 4 ohms vs 2 ohms mean the amp is actually running half as much?

    100 watts at 4 ohms =~ 200 watts at 2 ohms.

    My guess is that there is something else wrong here. Perhaps there is a short somewhere, when he drives it hard the short to ground is overloading the amp.


    edit: thinking more, I guess he would have to turn the system up louder to get the same volume if he is running 4 ohm speakers, but that shouldnt put it into overheat protection. the system was designed to run 2 ohm loads at max volume, a 4 ohm load at the same max volume would produce less sound, but also less heat/strain on the amp.

    I'm genuinely interested in this. In my experience it would be expected if you ran a 2ohm speaker attached to a 4ohm amp channel. The amperage and wattage would essentially be doubled in this scenario, the amp would eventually go into protect mode or overheat. Not sure if there's something different with the OE JBL amp but running an amp at a greater resistance would net less current and the running temp would be lower.

    Are the JBLs for sure all 2ohm speakers?

    I know the non JBLs fronts are wired in parallel and running 2 4ohm speakers (tweet and door) will net a 2ohm load, I've had no issues with this in the past though. Perhaps they are of varied resistance? Based off what was mentioned though it sounds like either they ended up with a lower resistance or there may be a short somewhere.

    I put in a pair of 6x9 Kickers and 6.5 Alpines! I don’t know the models off hand but they worked well in my old truck?? It’s not a wiring issue either because I used speaker harnesses.

    Just went on Crutchfield’s site to read up on the PAC Amp Pro and the instructions say you must retain the factory amp when adding aftermarket amp! I’m confused as to why??? Also I don’t see where the speaker wire outputs from aftermarket amp are used? Diagram shows only RCA’s connected! How does the sound out of the external amp reach the speakers??? I’m assuming that they feed back through the factory amp and out to the speakers but don’t see how that actually works??? I don’t want to buy all this stuff and not be able to use it???

    Check out the Rockford dsr1, it should interface with the jbl system to remove the amp. Not 100% sure though.

    I have one that's coming today, but I'm running in standalone mode.

    I was looking through old posts for the wiring schematic for a 2018 Tacoma with JBL system and found one for a 2013, has it changed since then or can I refer to this one?
