Got a crazy sound coming from in the dash. Tried all the solutions in the forums and none have worked. Sounds like something inside the dash.

Anyone know how hard it is to remove the entire dash?

Ya but the dealer is clueless. They’ve had it twice and keep telling me it’s “fixed.” They put some kind of dash insulation kit in it. Didn’t do a damn thing so I think I’m on my own here

It sounds like one of the adhesive backed foam strips is sticking and u sticking somewhere. Already looked into the A pillar trim and the speaker cover area. It’s definitely inside the dash from what I can tell now

    This might sound crazy....
My neighbor had what we believed to be a ticking sound in the dash of his 2018 double cab. We drove the piss out of that truck, over bumps and through fields to replicate the ticking noise. We were convinced the noise was originating from behind the gauge pod or the stereo. We then opened up the dash, piece by piece, panel by panel, even removed the center console to remove the lower parts of the center stack. The dash surgery took hours. We placed socks into every space we could find. Went for a test drive through the field and damn it! The noise was still there. Out of crazy frustration, my neighbor pushed up on the headliner at the visor right at the spot where it meets the windshield. That was the problem, the headlined was bumping against the windshield making that sticky ticking sound. To fix the problem,we applied adhesive backed black felt across the windshield in that blacked out edge portion of the windshield. Maybe that is your issue?

Yeah I had a noise that sounded like was at the bottom on the windshield. Turns out it was from the top of the A pillar on the opposite side.

The headliner windshield joint is where my makes noise, typically on cold mornings , sometimes whenever the hell it feels like it. Just had to push up on it this morning ... thought it was dash as well, but seems to be headliner

Wow I sure hope this is the issue. I’ll check when I get off work. That would be the dream situation. Any idea why it would sound like it’s in the dash though? I’m guessing maybe the sound travels down the glass??

I'm not sure if its travelling down ie vibrating down the glass to the dash or what....but that's my best crazy guess. I was certain mine was radio dash area, followed the guides here on removing radio trim....nothing . After putting my dashcam in the gopro mount, pushed up on with headliner just forward of the sunglasses holder and its stopped.... mysteries

Pulling just the radio gives some access in just a few minutes. There are also a couple of connectors behind the pad above the glove box that have given some people fits. Also easy access. As for the headliner, Toyota uses some spray adhesive to secure wires to the headliner that run to the console. The headliner flexes and then the adhesive gives off a tick as it contacts the roof. I dropped the headliner and covered the adhesive in tesa tape and it took care of it.

Oh I’m pissed. Traded in an F150 platinum after it blew the turbo just before the warranty expired. And now this crap. I’ve had multiple issues with my Tacoma to this point. I’ve fixed all but this one. So annoying.

I poked around on the headliner today and heard a couple noises but nothing like the static sticking noise I hear near the windshield where the dash meets. Actually the noise sounds similar but I can tell for sure that it’s coming from the headliner and not where I normally hear the noise. I took the instrument cluster out and moved around some stuff and heard some areas where it could have been making noise. I ripped out some of that crappy foam that’s in there and put get in certain areas. I also noticed that when all 4 screws are in the instrument cluster, the dash makes a slight noise when pushed from above that sounds similar to the noise. Not sure that’s actually it. I left the top 2 cluster screws out to allow the dash to flex more and the noise goesaway when pushed. Drive it around to test it out but of course it’s raining so I couldn’t hear it if I wanted to. I’ll check again when the rain stops.

Personally, I would never even think about pulling an entire dash to find a "crazy noise" that seems to be coming from inside it or behind it. First, you remove it to find a single, let's say rattle or rub sound, you could have just removed what was causing the sound. Second, when you put it back in you now have 3 or 4 rattles or rub sounds that are different from the one you originally had. Third, it's an 18 and if you ever have a warranty issue involving the dash, some tech savvy Toyota guy that actually knows what he's doing could look up behind there and decide that they're not going to cover the issue because someone had taken apart the dash at some point in time. Not saying you're not capable of doing the job, just know how it would turn out for me if it were my 18... Stuff happens.
