Ok. I ordered rotors from the link on Amazon that you posted, but they won’t get to me until Apr. 19. I called local dealer and they can get them for Tue., so I ordered from them too. I can send the Amazon rotors back or just keep them until I have to do another brake job on the truck in 5 years. LOL. The dealer has the shims in stock so I’ll get those on Tue. as well.

Did you do your upgrade on the 1998, I’ve seen some people having issues with the brake booster
and a soft pedal after the swap for the 1995-1999? I think earlier brake booster not compatible?
Or did you swap out to the new brake booster type?

I think this is on a case-by-case basis. I've now added Tundras to both my 2000 Tacoma and 97 4Runner and both feel totally fine (by which I mean way better than stock). @Blackdawg felt like he could tell the difference on his '03 Tacoma though when he put in an earlier year (98-00) master cylinder before switching back to his '03, so :notsure:.

Guess at some point, I'll have to do a truck swap with him when we aren't in a situation where I might hear over the CB radio, "Oops, sorry about that - I caught some air."

I didn’t, I haven’t had an issue. I think after reading up on the issue concensus was a bigger brake booster wasn’t work the trouble.

So I thought I was going to be able to finish the brakes today. I picked up the Eclipse calipers from NAPA on Sat. My brake pads came via Amazon on Sunday. And I picked up the rotors and shims from the local Toyota dealer today. That said, I never checked the part nos. and alas, when I got home I realized they gave me rotors and shims for a 2011 Tundra (5-lug), not a 2003. Ugh. They tell me the right ones will be in tomorrow.

I finally have all the right parts, including 2 sets of the correct rotors. LOL.

Does anyone have a diagram of how the shims get installed on the Tundra calipers/pads. One side is solid and the other side has long open slats.

Here are the shims. The ones with the slats are stainless on one side but black on the other. 8EC095F8-1441-4F7F-A5E8-8E5C30A6017C.jpg

    Thanks!
I read the same thing somewhere else. The solid shims go up against the pistons, and the shiny side of the slotted shim faces that shin with the black part against the brake pad. I’ll take a picture once I get them assembled (tomorrow).

Awesome! Thanks! Unfortunately, neither my shim kit nor my pads had any disc brake grease included. Is this a Toyota-specific item or can I get this at any auto parts store?

Got the brakes bled. Noticeable improvement in braking. Well worth the effort and expense!

Thanks to everyone (esp. turbodb and mechanicjon) for walking me through this upgrade!

Suspension upgrade is next on list!
