When the ceiling joists break, both cables will not be supporting the beam anymore, the floor will.

 

In that case, what's the velocity of the beam just before it hits the floor? What is the acceleration and momentum of the beam?

 

I agree. If the beam is horizontal with the points dropping from ceiling are at different heights the tension will be equal. If the points on ceiling are at same level and the beam is not level due to different length rigging then the shorter of the two will have more tension.

 

That is the model I used. The lower left attachment point I called "A" and that is point about which i took the moments.

 

exactly, if you incrementally increase the length of the left cable, at some point the beam would be hanging straight down and supported fully by the shortest cable.

Usually the rigging with the low end has the most weight. I've done years and years of tower crane erection and whenever we over elevate a piece, the high side transfers all the weight to the low side

 

but the drawing has the lines at 90 degree angles and at the very end of the beam so they are supporting the same weight

Equal weight on each cable assuming equal loading on beam.
Length of cable does not matter as long as the cables are parallel to each other.

 

Disregard my last answer. I thought the beam was level and mounts were uneven.

I believe your first answer was correct. the beam isn't full of fluid so there is no weight transfer just because the lines change length

 

Think of it this way...
If that beam was suspended by a single cable in the middle, how would you get the beam to that angle? You have to add some force to the end right? Grab it and pull down a bit and hold it. It won't be much force but in the OP example the cables will carry different loads.

correct. but since the lines are on the very end of the beam there is no extra force. If the lines were coming from a center mountng point to the ends. The low end of the beam would have to be heavier, but since they are at 90 degrees and at the very end of the beam nothing is changing except the line length
