I have never driven a ranger so cannot comment BUT i can attest to the chevy s10 that my employer at the time in the '90s used as part of their work fleet. They were 2wd AT with toppers and handled like a work pickup truck would.
I test drove my Tacoma and HolyMoly this ain't nothing like the s10!!! This feels and handles like a sporty truck :burnrubber: this i gotta have!
... and still feels that way 22yrs later

Yeah, my truck was made at the numi plant (as were all 1st gens, iirc) in CA. Not outsourced to Mexico.

Stopped by my local Culver’s last Friday for ice cream. Had no idea they have a classic car/hot rod gathering there on Fridays. I parked in the non-show area between a giant-ass F250 and gianter-assed Chevy 4wd. All I could see out the side windows were door handles. When I came out the Chevy was gone and 3 guys from the classic car group were admiring ‘04 Taco. Gotta say it felt pretty good.

i just chatted with a Ranger specialist and they said no ford trucks are equipped with MT o_O
... saw a window sticker on a big Ram diesel yesterday that said 'Real trucks have 3 pedals'

20180902_141135.jpg 20180627_122700.jpg When my wife, who looks like Annette Bening, drives this old man's 2000 PreRunner, someone always offers to buy it. I don't know if they wanna purchase the truck or if it's a "pickup" line.
That's grandson Ethan in the photo. When his mom drives my son's '85 4Runner with a solid front axle, someone always offers to buy it. Val looks like Amy Adams. I don't know if it's a "pickup" line or "4Runner."

Got one more compliment today! At this point almost unbelievable. We were in Santa Clara for their citywide garage sales. Parked at a house to see their sale and here comes a guy rolls up behind us. I say to Rosie "he's walking up to my side-you think it's another one??"
Crazy. This guy asked what year and when I told him he responded about how it looks showroom new. So proud I took care of my baby all these years:humble:

so I will admit i went 'fishing' for a compliment today at the one place I thought I would get one ... the DEALER!
    but it was unsatisfactory
I am in the market for a new corolla so it was not a 'lame excuse'
... have had my eye on one of the new snazzy flame blue hatchbacks
but they did not have one on the lot to test drive since I am interested in only the 6sp MT (a bonus is it costs less than the AT)
they could find me one about 400 miles away at another dealer but I need to give them a deposit wth?

I backed my truck up into a spot so the front was easily viewable.
The young salesguy asked me what year it was since he had never seen one like that!

then I get out on the freeway and am surrounded by big black trucks everywhere plus a bunch of black cars
maybe its possible I have the wrong color that does not stand out :notsure:

Frank, that 1st Gen. looks in great shape! Personally, I take the running boards off before getting to deep in the back country! I put them back on, straight and undamaged, when time to sell!

I am a Canadian geologist who has worked off-road since 1970 across North & South America, Africa, and the Middle East. I started with an International 4x4 “Station Wagon” that got 7 miles to the gallon but was indestructible. Along the way I have had Ford, GM and Toyota 4x4s. No question, the Land Cruisers, Hiluxes, 4Runners, and Tacomas are the go-to solutions for staying on the job with minimal maintenance. I even use RAV4s in the mountains of Europe! The Fords and GMs, I buy used, and use them to haul fuel and supplies on unchallenging roads. The Toyotas, I usually buy new, they get no praise, but they safely get over crazy bad, narrow, washed-out roads and don’t leave us stranded. No seized engines, drive-train shimmy, twisted frames, popping body panels or rattles.

I have just bought a used 2016 Tacoma TRD Off Road with 30,000 km. Looking to be reminded of the California supplier of the good, bolt-on rock sliders I had on my last 4Runner. Can’t find the old receipt!

Thanks for your Toyota testimonial and story of Tacoma provenance Paul, and for bringing it here:) I dug up a link for sliders-not sure if this is who you used in the past
    https://caliraisedled.com/collections/2016-toyota-tacoma/products/sliders
    but hope it's a lead.

There's a million of them in South Carolina. I look for another one in the
parking lot whenever I go to Lowes or the grocery store in my small town,
    and almost always see one.

-Mike "still... it is hard to buy a good one..."
