Nope. Haven't heard back from Andrew. I sent him a text last Wednesday. I'll try again in the next couple days.

 

When are you going to finish up that rear bumper so I can check it out?

 

Hopefully get the rest of it done this weekend. Picking up a new wire spool and fresh bottle tomorrow morning so I can finish welding the bumper and start working on the swing out. Now that I actually have a job again, I don't have nearly as much time to work on the truck. But I have every other Friday off so a 3 day weekend twice a month will help!

Rear bumper and swing out build - completion (mostly)

Finally had time to go get a fresh bottle of welding gas and upgraded to a slightly larger bottle while I was at it. Also picked up to 11lb spools of wire so I have a spare if/when I need it. Finished welding up the bumper and started doing the grinding to make it look pretty-ish.



Got all the grinding done and then had to remount it to the truck to start on the swingout fabrication. The rear bumper weighs a shitload more than the front does, with a lot of that weight coming from the wings. They make the bumper want to flop forward. Tough to handle on my own but I figured out a system of sorts. It's mostly safe.



The bumper will have to come off at least one more time for painting but I will get someone to give me a hand when I get to that point (@Ace115). That's when I will add the bed side hoops as well since I am still deciding on where and how high on the wings they are going to be. I also wanted to get the swing out done so I could finally get the spare out of the bed.

With the bumper mounted, I did a trial fit of the shackles on the recovery points.





These are thicker than the front ones, for now. I have additional plate to add to the front points when I work that bumper again. I took care of some tight spots when I was doing the grinding. The driver side wing was super close at one point to the bed side and needed some clearance. Much better now.



I also had to clearance the leading edge when it goes under the bedside cuts as they were touching before. Note that if you decide to get this bumper, you can cut about 1/2" more than what the directions indicate. Then you wouldn't have to clearance the bumper like I did.





The passenger side wing fit nicely and didn't need any adjustments.



So with the bumper itself done, it was time to build the swing out. Started off by welding my nuts in place.



Those end up on the inside of the swingout and aren't accessible when it's done so you have to weld them on solid before anything else. Then you can put the hinge together but you can't weld that in place just yet.



Added the catch plate/ swingout support. With everything done, I am going to have to cut this off and make it slightly shorter. The swing out has almost a 1/2" gap at the end from the pivot end. I was in too much of a hurry to get the swing out completed and should have checked before hand.



With the catch pad in place, now the swingout can be positioned and welded on.



I didn't figure this out until I was done and had the tire mounted but I should have put the catch on the end of the swingout instead of the back face. With the catch locked and the weight of the tire, it causes the whole swingout to tilt back, away from the tailgate. I have a new catch on order and will cut this setup off and replace it when it arrives. Again, my mistake for being in a rush and wanting to get the swingout done.



The hinge welded in place. I think I might add some reinforcement between the upper and lower hinge plates. That would also act as a stop to prevent the swingout from swinging too far out. The pivot bolt will also get cut to length so all the exposed thread isn't dangling in the wind.



Main wheel support tube burned in.



And then I forgot to take pictures and finished piecing the swingout together.



Wheel is mounted using some spare bolts until I get wheel studs for it. You can really see what I was talking about earlier here with the catch pulling the swingout away from the tailgate when it's latched. I also found that the wheel sits way too far back from everything and I am going to have to cut the mount off and adjust in in about 3"-4". Of course my dumbass went and welded everything up before checking the fit.









And that's about it. Just need to make some adjustments to the tire carrier to get that wheel tighter to the truck and it'll be done.









It's nice to have use of the full bed once again!

I can’t remember, but are you running 35s or were you planning to at some point?

 

Planning on. Gunna let these 285s wear out first. Problem is, they last a long time so it might be a while.

 

Poked around with the swingout some but didn't feel like really working on it much. Waiting for the new latch to come in so I can cut the current one off and put the new latch on the end of the swingout tube instead of the face where it is now. So, istead I decided to install the ADS coilovers I picked up last Monday. Still the stuck UCA and everything else for now. I really don't feel like tearing the front end apart for a rebuild just yet. I did notice I have 555 LBJs, didn't know they came greasable cause mine are. Anyhow, coilover install went fine with only the drivers side lower bolt fighting me a little bit. Drove to the store since I needed food and all I can say is that damn, my old Bilstein 5100s were way more shot that I realized. The ADS are much, much better so far.
