2011 reg cab 4x4 5 speed,gas mileage rating change?

Just wondering why they changed from 17/22 to 18/20, is the new grill that unaerodynamic at highway speeds?

 

I don't know, but I can do better than that in a full size truck. It certainly wouldn't win me over.

 

I heard somewhere on here they are only offering autos this year on the 4x4 4cylinder models so maybe that is why.

 

Just d'ont get it, no changes other than the grill. and the gas mileage ratings for all 4cyl tacomas except 1 changed.
4x4 5speed went from 17/22 to 18/20
4x4 4 speed auto 18/21 ?????????????
4x2 5 speed went from 20/26 to 20/25
4x2 4 speed went from 19/25 to 19/25 (it stayed the same)

 

no there are changes. 4 speed autos are being offered in reg cab 4x4 AC 4x4 and reg cab prerunner and AC prerunners. jesus H

 

They should just stop offering the 4clyd in our trucks and just offer a de-tuned 4.0L V6 with increased gas mileage.

 

word^ haha i want a v6 with better gas mileage that way i can get a SC for it. and have the gas mileage of a 4cyl with 430rwp

 

What I mean is smaller exhaust, smaller intake, ecu reflash. Even if they did a new tuned exhaust and an ecu reflash I am sure they could get 5mpg better out of the V6. It just wouldn't make as much power.

 

Not sure detuning would offer better MPG. Wouldn't you need to use more throttle on a detuned engine and as a result use more gas? I owned and drove detuned engines in new cars during the late '70's. They were detuned with lower compression ratios and mild cam timing to improve emissions. All the MPG sucked in the vehicles since you were always matting the pedal to make them go.
I am thinking more along the lines of a small turbo diesel or what Ford is now doing with its small turbo gas engines.
By 2016, all trucks will have to average 26 mpg so this technology for the Tacoma is only 5 years away.

 

Yes but now everything is electronically controlled. Sure if you mash the gas pedal you will get lower MPG just like any vehicle. Tuning for MPG could easily be done by Toyota without changing any of the internals on the 4.0L. Plus for the Regular cab guys having more power, lighter truck and a light foot could add up to some high MPG averages. The 2.7L just isnt cutting it with in the new Tacomas. The Tacoma is a big truck which needs a powerful, fuel efficient engine and the V6 could fill that spot.
