Hello all I have a 04 Tacoma 2.7l, and started off about 2 months ago making a small ticking noise and gradually getting louder to like a rattling noise at all times but gets loud when accelerating expecially loud in the morning. Sounds like the timing chain is slapping the guides. Well before I dig into that I decided to take my air box off and hooked up a shop vac to the tale pipe to send air through so I could spray soapy water to see the air bubbles.. well I have 3-4 small leaks 1 on the EGR port where it hooks to the header, 1 on the weld of the header by the block and onewhere the header clamps to the exhaust.Could this make such a loud noise???

    Depends what you call loud.

Loud enough it gives you a head ache?

Makes your ears ring!! Hearing protection needed to drive more then 1/4 mile

Quite possible as the exhaust heats up the metal expends making it get some what quiet.

Most times I just crawl under with the engine running .

Loud Enough it makes it sound like your engine is knocking.. trying to pinpoint the noise. It’s under the hood just can’t tell exactly where.

I've had my egr leak several times. It could be confused with something wrong internally I suppose.

That’s where I seen the main leak, does it make lots of noise though?

    YouTube and a link

You might be able to pin point it better if you have a long screw driver and use it as a stethoscope

Ouch so basically I’d be better off throwing a new engine in it..

probably honestly. but i would look more into the noise.. could be something on the accessory belt, Try taking all the belts off and run the engine.. see if goes away

sure doesnt sound like anything exhaust related

That sounds way too fast for a cylinder problem at idle.

I would be looking closer at something up front.

I don't know what exactly but it should be loud enough to find easily enough.

It it were something internal (past timing) I would think that noise would have already blown up by now. Maybe a guide broke?

Wrist pin knock sounds quick. Like a double knock.

I’ve replaced the timing chain tensioner since it was fairly cheap and easy to do. That didn’t do anything.. the sound is hard to pin point it sounds like it’s coming from somewhere on the drivers side of the engine. Tomorrow I’m going to pull the belts and run it for a second to see if that does anything.

Wrist pin is the pin that connects the rod to the piston
