Rather than buying a kit, pick a couple easy patterns, buy the materials for them and have at it. Most people start with a wooly bugger or hares ear or the like. Get your proportions/technique down on those and move on to other patterns :)
You’re gonna need a good vise. You get a lot of bang for your buck with the renzetti traveler pedestal base. Then you’ll need some good scissors (dr. Slick ftw) and a good bobbin. Ceramic lined ones are great. Then a whip finisher and u should be good for tools until u figure out what u need next lol

As far as found/roadkilled/hunted materials good luck with that lol. Turkey and duck feathers are a good place to start and I could use a chunk of moose hair/hide if u kill one of those :)

Really depends on what you’re into… Small stream? Tail water? Warm water? When are you going to be up this way?

Guide trip on Friday, then Sat is wherever i want to go(ish). Hopefully i get my shot at some monsters on Friday, and i've got a small rig for some small stream/wild trout fishing. I'm familiar with tailwater fishing as that is what is mostly in Arkansas. I'm really game for whatever.

If you get a kayak on the toccoa, can you get out and wade in various spots?

Join one of the local clubs!

Where are you based out of? If you're in the east bay, you should consider the Grizzly Peak Fly Fishers. They put on a few trips throughout the year as well as a monthly lecture series. They meet 2nd tuesdays at the church across the street from the Kensington Community Center. All the members have been super helpful getting me started out in fly fishing.

Does anybody know of any available fly shop/ fishing guide jobs available around the country? I'm looking to get out of Illinois and make fly fishing into a career.

If you have the passion you will find the place. I would go to Southwest Montana all things being equal.

That just so happens to be my favorite place to fish. I am sorely tempted to move out there and see what comes my way. Maybe I'll spend a few weeks out there this summer and see what opportunities there are.

Amazing fishing. I have a house in Belgrade, MT. Fish the Madison, Gallatin, Missouri, Beaverhead, Yellowstone, Jefferson, Big Hole within an hour or so. Yellowstone NP maybe 1 ½ hrs. Go to NW MT or Idaho or WY and even more. Absolutely the best region on the world. (I haven’t fished New Zealand).

The Missouri is my favorite river to fish, that glassy water and all of those microcurrents make for fun fishing, not to mention the abundance of big trout. I also enjoy fishing the Madison. I always fish it below Quake and usually not past $3. I've fished a little in the Park, but haven't been there when any hatches were happening (I'm usually out there too early). I've always wanted to thit the green drake hatch on the Henry's Fork, but have not done that yet.
