So this just happened, again...

Was driving on hwy for no more than an hour. Right lane, cruise set at speed limit and not tailgating. Another *@!@@#$ rock hits my windshield and it cracks instantly. Now, i get it, it happens not a ⁷big deal.

The thing i dont understand is i had quite a few cars/trucks before and had rocks hit my windshield with no problems. Went on a 1600km road trip on my old truck with 0 problems. I heard rocks hit the glass and was fine.

I already replaced windshield on a taco like 4 months ago at like 2k miles (same thing, speed limit, right lane ) and now its cracked again. Not planning to pay deductable again for now because summer is coming so ill go camping and do some small road trips.

I only have 6k miles on truck and its the second windshield thats cracked.

So my question is: is it my bad luck ( which is not surprising) or is it just that the tacos have thin/fragile glass? Arent most windshields made on same factory anyways??

 

This can happen on any vehicle. I had a windshield replaced on my F150 and it cracked four weeks later. The assholes around here refuse to sweep off their trailer decks.

 

Funny thing is, both times no 18 wheelers or flat deck trucks around. Thats what surprised me. I guess just wrong place at the wrong time.

 

That sucks. I had a freakin brick hit my OE 2nd gen windshield and bouce off without even a chip.

 

We pay 200$ deductable in BC canada here, and my insurance is still 300$ a month with their 43% off for save driving for 7 years. Crazy.

 

JK Wranglers are far worse, I went through 4 windshields in 16k miles. Chalk it up to bad luck unfortunately.

 

It's just bad luck, nothing more. Every make vehicle I've owned for the last 15 years has always had someone complaining about the fragile glass or the thin paint or whatever. It's simply bad luck, that's all. And it sucks.

 

This does make me wonder when I read these threads about 3rd gen glass being so fragile. I have at least 3 bullseyes in my 2nd gen windshield and none have spidered into a crack. Got the first one within a couple months of owning it and now I'm at 110k on the clock with no cracks whatsoever. (As I knock on wood)

 

I had 4 cars and 2 trucks so far and 0 problems on highways. Maybe i should stay off highways for now ha.

 

Statistics. You were due.

 

On my third windshield at 15k miles. These windshields are definitely more fragile compared to all my other past vehicles.

 

I think all the manufacturers are going with thinner/lighter glass for weight savings.

Bad Luck. 37K miles, no issues here. My FJ had 25K miles on it and it's windshield looked like the windshield from the shuttle in the movie "Armageddon".

 

Yup, you guys are lucky south of the border.

 

People are unlucky with these windshields. I drove the Alaska highway, had one rock fly up and hit my windshield, a big one! This thing left dust from the impact and left a tiny chip, almost unnoticeable. The impact sounded like a gun shot. Some of you guys have a bird shit on your windshield and it shatters..idk

 

I think just bad luck. I've taken some big rocks off mine and it's not even chipped. I assume you're in the lower mainland, too....I get rock chips in the paint more than the windshield from other vehicles

 

Just trolling but the distance in miles/kilometers a vehicle accumulates has literally nothing to do with the life expectancy or durability of a windshield...
BUT the angle, velocity, and edge hardness an object impacts the windshield is a determining factor whether it is deflected without as much as a scratch, or if the object does more damage... Ambient temperature can also be a factor.

One winter I had a tiny nick nearest passenger side on my previous windshield and had the heater on while driving to work, then on lunch break decided to get something to-go when I saw a beautifully long hairline crack originating from the nick all the way across to the sealed edge on my driver side.

 

I think the main engineering focus on windshield design has been reducing cabin noise, as the windshield is the greatest source of transmitted noise.

I can’t find the link, but I recall seeing something where Mike Sweers was saying the new 3G Tacoma windshield was much quieter. Maybe this makes it more brittle.
