Poll: Talk me into, or out of, Amber fog lights

Not planning on going for cheap retrofit lamps or covers. Was looking at the KCHilites Gravity G4, but amber or clear?

I’ve read the scientific papers about Selective Yellow light, and the argument goes both ways......so it’s up to you TW peeps. Are the amber lamps just cool looking, are they awesome for driving in weather, or do they just bug you after a while? Is there an obvious advantage to one over the other in your direct personal experience?

My uses for the lights would be fog and rain, and for more light on the trails and rainy streets.

I want an SAE/DOT approved street legal variety, so don’t say “get squadron pros”.

Any and all comments or suggestions welcome.

 

I'd get clear. But I'm in AZ ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'd use em mostly for trail.

How do they do in the dust at night? Some guys say this is when amber is most useful.

I have the stock fog lights as well. They are OK, but leave me wanting a little more, while not blinding myself or others.

 

I got stock housings but changed to amber bulbs. I like them 100% better over stock. I think they provide a nice contrast against the road paired with headlights especially on dark roads. They provide slightly better lighting in my opinion as well during rain.

Here are the bulbs I bought. They were part of prime a couple months ago too when I got them, not sure why they aren’t anymore.

White will reflect light off dust, fog, heavy rain, snow etc. Amber won't be as bright when it's clear, but more practical if you go off road often. I have morimoto fogs in white, and I like them..but I might end up going with amber when I get a bumper

 

I'm not sure I really understand the advantage of amber, can someone explain? Is it easier to see when dusty?

Thanks. I had not considered halogens. Those are interesting. Also halogen alleviates the LED issue of them freezing over in sleet and snow.

 

Easier to see in snow imo... in bad snow I turn the headlights off and just run my amber Baja designs.

 

When I see the amber ones I always wonder how long till they're a dated accessory like the chrome roll bar, kc lights etc...

Nokya NOK7618 Hyper Yellow H11 55W bulbs. They cost me roughly $20 for the set, and are a huge improvement over the OE H16 19W.

Here's what they (the NOKYA fog lights) looked like as it was beginning to get dark. Low beam headlights, and H11 Hyper Yellow fogs. It'll be a few months before I have much fog to try them out in.

OP-Go Amber, I've had both and the amber is much more pleasing to drive with on your eyes, I find it doesn't attract the deer from the side of the road as much either (could totally be a random coincidence, but deer don't run in front of me anymore they stop and look) and it is so much easier on the eyes on rain and crappy weather.

If you are only doing trails in nice open weather, sure the clear will "expose" more of the trail or whatever for you. If you want them for what they are made for (bad weather) then get the ambers.

Put on some ditch lights if you want some super far reaching trail runner effect.


I have had the morimoto LED clear and ambers in my taco. Amber hands down 10/10 times I won't ever go back. I actually would want my headlights amber at this point since the stock halogen suck anyways, I figure it wouldn't hurt my visiability much.

 

OEM TRD OR fog lights were great until on a dusty road or in adverse weather condition such as rain, fog etc. I preferred an OEM look so I grabbed TRD Pro fogs off of Ebay during a coupon sale (got fogs and bezels for ~$300). The LED output is 10x better on previously mentioned conditions. I don't experience "bounceback" or "reflection" in fog or snow and the light output isn't lost in wet road conditions.
However, I have used amber or "yellow" fogs in previous vehicles and they have proven beneficial in adverse weather conditions. I have not used amber fogs in my Tacoma though, so can't provide an accurate comparison. Personally, I like the OEM LED look over the "tuner" amber look, but to each their own. I have no scientific evidence to support any of my opinions.

 

I too am an Amber fan... I swapped out the OEM's for the Nokia's bulb. They work pretty well. But I am wanting a little more throw. So, I want to upgrade to the KC's or Baja Design's... just they cost 5X the price of a bulb swap.

 

Get white DOT/SAE rigids and get amber covers. Swap them on in the winter and off when winter is over. Takes 10 seconds. Best of both worlds any time of year.

I've used their fog bulbs for 10+ years in different vehicles, and always had good luck.

 

I plan on getting the same KCHilites in amber. Just waiting for some more overtime at work! I like the amber color and run something in the yellow hue on all my vehicles. I got a yellow/amber bulb on one side of my Yamaha super tenere headlights. I figure different catches peoples attention.

 

I'm planning on ordering the Amber Baja Designs this week. My son has them on his FJ and they work great in rain and fog (from NE Ohio).
