We used this super thin green rolled foam type of underlay for the laminate floor by the front door. Keep in mind this is Canada so i'm layin' upstairs floor over wood & moisture is less of a factor.

Use a spray bottle with water and mist it all down as you go , thats how the remediators would remove it too . It keeps the friable particles from becoming airborne .

I used roofing felt on my slab before installing ceramic tile. It was glued down to the slab. I was more worried about the cracks moving in So Cal earthquakes. It's been there since 2001 without any tiles or grout being displaced. Just something to consider.

If you are concerned about the possibility of asbestos I'd take a few more precautions, even though glue should be pretty completely non-friable.

-Tape plastic up covering doorways and vents, turn HVAC off.

-Skip the shop-vac. Unless it's a HEPA filter it'll just blow fibers around, and may reintroduce them later when you use it.

-Add a little dish soap in your spray bottles of water, not sure exactly why but it was something I read and it seems to help.

-Dont skimp on PPE. Get a legit respirator with the pink P100 filters, that's probably the most important things. We went full up, tyvek suits, rubber boots and gloves, chem goggles. Was hot as fuck even with below freezing temps outside and heat off.

-Keep debris wet when you bag it, double bag and tape it. Dispose properly, don't just throw it in with your normal garbage lol.

-When you're all done, wipe EVERYTHING down with water and mop the floors too.

If you have the room to match floors that will join to it, what about putting self leveling compound over the top? I had to use it in a second floor bedroom and the floor came out so perfectly level you can drop a marble on it and it won't roll. The subfloor doesn't move at all now, no creaking boards under foot. It's amazing, I wouldn't put down laminate without it honestly (unless already on a perfectly smooth slab).

Looking Good  Nice clean work area. Interesting how different geographic areas use different materials for building ....looks like all plywood for you and no OSB. Yet, here in Colorado it would be the opposite - OSB instead of plywood. Unless the specs called for fire resistant sheeting, then it would probably be fire resistant plywood, but I haven't seen that for years.

I never use OSB , its not really used at all residentially in my area

When my S.I.L was drywall sanding his basement with a newborn in the house, I lent him a long 3" dia. hose that he hooked up to the shop vac discharge so he could vent it out a window. It worked, No sign of dust in the house.

Depends on what you are putting it on. Did you say over a slab? If so, I think it can go that thin. If you apply over plywood, it needs expanded metal mesh which you have to cover, but I believe if straight onto a slab it doesn’t need the mesh and can go as thin as 1/8”. It probably depends on the SLC that you use. I had good luck with the stuff Home Depot sells near me.

Getting ready to build a house and sheathing options are OSB or Dow Foam board. I’ve read enough about the both of them but would like an opinion from someone else. I’m leaning towards the OSB as I’m not sure the insulation gained from the Dow board would justify it over the strength of the OSB. Of course, if using the Dow, OSB would still be used in places where windows/doors are.

    Any opinions?

The insulating sheeting is nice as far as cutting thermal bridging through the studs but then you need to address your lateral restraint issues by other means . Here we would go 1/2" ply and comfortboard of XPS over that for exterior insilation value

    Hey guys.

I’ve got a weird issue going on with my thermostat in my house.
The thermostat is hardwired and had batteries in the back.

One day I turned the heat up when I got home and felt like the furnace was just pouring out heat so I walked back to the thermostat and it was blank.
I pulled it out from the wall, waited about 30 seconds and plugged it back in and it popped back up.

    Same thing happened yesterday.
The box is firmly pressed into the wall so its not wiggling from the connection.
I put new batteries in it but feel that shouldn’t be an issue if its hardwired??
The circuits obviously aren’t tripping and power is getting to the box.

I feel like the furnace goes full boar when it happens but that could just be in my mind.

What kind of things can I check to see if its a simple fix vs just needing to buy a new thermostat.
I’m concerned about leaving home and the furnace just flares up all day. I have a cat and prefer that not be the way she dies.
That happened in an old office I worked at where that happened and the interior got to 140F

Furnace and thermostat are 13 years old.

    Thanks!

Definitely get a floor scraper but be careful not to chip the slab, and I have found that a heat gun (used with caution) may help...or just make the old adhesive extra sticky. Either way it’s hard, time consuming work.

Do you have any info on the thermostat or a picture?

The wires going into the thermostat may not provide power. Mine do not. They just send a signal to the furnace and tell it when to kick on.

It would probably be tough to troubleshoot a thermostat. Even if you found the problem it would probably be more expensive to fix then it is worth. I'd pick up a cheap one at home depot and try to swap them out. In the meantime, just flip the service switch on your furnace when you aren't home.
