60k Fluid Question

Hi Everyone,

So I am thinking of taking the plunge and doing the 60k service myself. I figure I could save some money instead of giving it to the stealership....

What fluids do you recommend for the Front/Rear Differential (incl the limited slip)?

What about the AT fluid? I know this doesn't need to be changed but would it not be good to do this now?

Was thinking Mobil 1 but not sure which product of theirs is best for our trucks...

I have an 07 4d Long Bed 4x4 Taco...

Any help is appreciated.

But I would suggest spending little more time of searching the forum (look for sticky's on the top of the page) this forum has pretty much every piece of info you need.

 

For the AT fluid I think you should use only the Toyota fluid. I honestly don't know where to get it if not the dealership. The process is a bit involved for changing it since you need to measure the temp of the fluid to set the level in this semi-sealed unit.

I read where one guy just drains it (3 qts) every 15K, puts exactly the same amount back and never worries about the temp thing. Makes all the sense in the world so long as you're getting the same volume back in.

 

The AT fluid is the only thing I'd have the dealer perform. They should flush the torque convertor when they change it, not just drain and refill. Basically run the fluid through the lines backwards to clean things out.

 

i used Redline in the diffs and transfer case..no issues.

 

That's true about getting the TC fluid being important when fluid's never been change. The strategy of doing the 15k change of 3 qts, though, is that you never let the ATF get bad as 1/4 is being frequently freshened.

I've done pretty much the same with my Maxima but I get 1/2 the fluid by just draining it so I do it every 40K or so. It's worked great and the fluid stays a nice bright red, not the blood red when it's old.

Are you sure they reverse-flush the fluid through the lines? I don't know if that is safe through the valve body and might not go everywhere any way if there's one-way valves.

 

I thought I had heard they reverse flush it, could be wrong on that part though. My old man used to be a mechanic and he's the one who told me about it when I was going to change my transmission fluid myself on my first truck. That being said, I was pretty young and probably doing the classic teenager tune-out. At least I caught the important part though!
