2017 E-Locker

Alright, snow has finally melted enough to get some work done. Final test today before the locker goes in this weekend. Everything looks good off the 5A circuit with good locking action and no overheat issues. Still trying to source the correct bulkhead fitting for the 3rd member.

 

Okay, it is in and working well. Here is the rundown of the issues that were faced


Spacing was off due to a collar on the E locker that was limiting the movement of the carrier. I took 3mm off the contact area of the housing and all was well.


Next, I tapped a 1/8in NPT connector into the housing for the wires to go through then filled it with RTV once they were run.


I ended up putting the resistor right up front in a high airflow area. I will need to watch it for a few weeks so make sure it is not melting the plastic around it.



Testing the locking mechanism at 3.5A, everything locked up well with no issues engaging


Just ran it around the neighborhood and the locker works great, full wheel hop on every corner with no disengagement. I cleaned up the wiring at the diff and now have a push button locked rear end to any speed I want!

 

Nice work! Where did you put the switch? Make sure that if other people drive your truck they don’t accidentally hit it or know to go no faster than 3-5mph when engaging

 

Here is the switch setup, fits perfectly in that useless hole in the dash on the left of the wheel. I might put a gate over the locker button just for that reason.

 

Not useless, it’s for a brake controller

 

Don't run a brake controller and will not need one, so this was a much better fit for that hole. But now I see why that was there.

 

I have a second gen and used the factory switch (also left of wheel) to control my Eaton locker and I’ve been thinking about a safety for it also. Haven’t come up with an aesthetically pleasing guard gate for it yet... I might just get a toggle switch I can hide somewhere to kill the locker switch instead

 

Yeah, I have been thinking about how to do it and think I am going to glue a 3D printed version of the orion spacecraft ones on there. Something like this:

Correct, couldn't find a decent spot to mount it and it took up a ton of space. Ended up going with 100A 1.5ohm.

 

Keep in mind... the locker unit is submerged in gear oil.
Any heating issues will easily dissipate into the gear oil... which is probably already going to heat it up more than any overcurrent might do.

I still think it would be fine to hit the locker with a solid 12v off a relay fed from the battery.

 

It's getting 12v, just at 3.5a instead of 5. But I see your point of heating.

 

I have read this thread and am curious about any updates to the results. Is the locker still running successfully and as intended?

 

Looking for an update as well. Interested in figuring out a way to be able to use oem E locker in 4 high or anytime

I have had Drive Train Specialties in my bookmarks since I read this thread. I randomly click on it and check out the factory E-locker... this past week, there was a change... it was priced at $209.95. So...


I might have ordered one.

This thing is clean, I see no wear on the side gears.


So now I start my own testing and see how I can make this work in my truck. I also want to source the factory electrical connector that goes into the third member. Looks like on my days off a trip to a dealership parts counter.

Is there anyone that could help me with a picture of the plug on an Off-Road or a Pro. Everyone I know that has Tacoma's had Sports.

 

I did some pretty deep searching, but I believe I finally have a part number for the electrical pass thru connector.



It also appears that this one from a Jeep will also work. This a Dorman 600-250. Only the external plug is different.


I will visit the dealer Thursday and see what the original is worth.

 

So I haven't gotten very far with this, and it will be a slow go... I want to do this right. With that in mind, I picked up a core third member from an autowrecker. ( Check you diff fluid! This is most likely the cause of the accident!! )



I wanted it for the case and the case is fine. This way I can have the correct wiring pass-through and also the locking feedback. This unit is seized, so I can tear down the locker to see how it works and use it to test thermal build up. I will post pictures and test results as they come. I might start a new thread for the tear down of the locker itself.

 

Yeah, but you can't get a TRDOR with the manual trans/access cab config in the USA.

 

Truetrac is a limited slip. Not a locker.

Couple other brands of lunchbox are Aussie and Powertrax.
