Deck Plate Refined. . .

For all you 4 bangers out there, 1st and 2nd Gen's:

One of our brother members, to some of us Warrior Brethren-98tacoma27, used his recon skills and found an interesting article.

The use of a velocity stack or box air port to refine the deck plate mod for 1st gens or maybe, just maybe the 2nd gen elbow delete[???]. I dont know if this is a repost or if anyone has tried this, maybe i should have conducted a search first, but im just throwing it out there. It is current and definitely interesting.
Anyone??

Very interesting, but it seems to suffer from a couple key operational considerations:

1. You can't close it up for dirty offroad/wet/submerged/smog registration conditions.
2. I couldn't even read the Dyno curves, but the article indicates that most of the gains come at RPMs much higher than you typically would drive these engines, which are designed for low-end torque.

 

X2, def like being able to close up the air box when need be, and I don't think many people put their RPMs up that high very often

 

I agree that the dyno curves were hard to read and it would be nice if the chart was bigger. However, it looked pretty clear that there was a larger difference between the curves at lower RPM's than at the peaks. Still hard to tell how much though.

 

What if you had a outer lip from the stack on the outside, then use a rubber-maid like cap to cover it. Something rubber that could pop on instead of the typical screw on ones you see?

 

Well I guess trying different containers until you find one that fits is an option, but a slow process unless you're lucky. I found some caps for velocity stacks that are meant for carbs. Another option could be to use a rubber cork like piece.

 

I guess I could rummage throught the wifes tupperware.

 

Just think, if someone finds a container that has a fitting lid, they can donate the container portion to Chris so he can have a dedicated bondo mixer. The wife will be happy the dinner doesn't taste like bondo!

 

how about something like a fernco pipe cap?

 

That's exactly what came to mind! Might be tricky getting it in behind the wash reservoir spout with the way the velocity stack sticks out plus the depth of this. Probably have to trim the caps' depth down as much as possible to there is just enough left for the hose clamp to seat on.

But again, is any of this worth it if the performance increase is not better or just marginally better the than DP by a couple hp? Really need three runs on the same truck on the same day: stock, DP, and VS. And it might still be just an exercise of picking flea shit out of pepper...
