3rd gen audio build - Joying tacoma headunit

Subwoofer pretty much done, just need to cover the front with carpet.

I did order a Rockford fosgate dsr1 for it's time alignment and crossovers and general flexibility.

That should be here next week.

System is sounding nice and full now with the sub, though sub volume is pretty low because I'm tapping off the rear speakers.


Future plans are to bi amp the front speakers. But I need to order another acm 4.300 for that.

The dsr1 will run the front speakers and the sub, then I will just run line level for the rear speakers. All speakers will get around 50 watts each, sub will get 300.

 

Scratch the dsr1 Amazon lost it.... Getting a refund on it, going to save up some more and get the audio control 10 channel dsp.

That should give me the extra space I need for biamping the 3 way fronts.

 

Have you looked at the Pioneer DEQ S1000A? Ill be running it in a 4Runner soon. It will allow you to tune with a 31 band EQ. Also allows for a band pass cross over when bi-amping, allowing for a true 3 way set up.

 

I have, it doesn't have enough outputs though. I need 6 channels for the front, 2 for the rear and a sub channel. I would love to use my old jbl gtx47, but its in my 1991 BMW.
It takes in 4 channels, then has 6 channels front, 6 rear, and subs. Amazing piece of equipment. All channels have crossover points, phase switches, the works.

the c-dsp 8x12 is pretty much what I need, I really wish they made a 10 channel though, but I guess I can use the spare 2 channels that are left with the mini dsp for bed speakers. Just need to make a toggle that turns off all the inside amps and turns on the 2 channel bed amp. Heres my craptastic ms paint model of the system.

 

So I got a new dsr1 and im either doing something wrong, or the subwoofer output on it is shit.

Volume is low, but randomly is boosts bass output to a overbearing level. Im going to play around some more with it, see if I can get it right. The rest of the speakers sound great though, time alignment puts the stage right in front of me instead of having the left side sound so much louder.

Depending on what I figure out, I may use the dsr1 to run just the interior speakers, then run the subwoofer off a line level right from the radio. I figure I can use the dsr1 to run 3 way bi amped front speakers, then what would the subwoofer channel can run the rear speakers since its just a mono channel and I can turn off the crossover for it. Rear fill is mostly just for my kids to hear, you cant hear it up front.

if I still cant get anything good out the unit I will return it for something else. Maybe save the money to go with the alpine one along with the alpine toyota headunit and that fancy switch controller.... would be nice to be able to turn on 12v stuff with the touch screen on the headunit.

 

Did a little bit of playing with dsr1 today, I got it all working right (I think), seems to be fine. I like the time alignment alot, but in the end I think I will get rid of the unit in favor of a audiocontrol dm608. Im not a fan of using the ipad to tune the system with a app that seems kinda gimmicky. I like the full featured non-flashy version that comes with the audio control that runs on a laptop instead of the ipad. Theres nothing really wrong with the rockford one, but sometimes I feel when they spend so much time making it pretty instead of simple they may be lacking in the rest of the code.

I am going to continue running it for awhile though. Im going to order another acm 4.300 amp this week and get a wire harness all mocked up to go from the under seat cubby to all the speakers so I can replace all the stock harnesses (keep the stock harnesses there for easy switch back, but bypassed)
6 channels going to the front (tweeters, mids, woofers), 2 to the rear(coaxial), 1 to the sub. All going to be wrapped in tape and formed perfect to the factory wire ties. I need to find some pins that fit the factory front door harness plugs so I can have the tweeters run in the door harness like factory.

 

Dm-810 and another acm 4.300 have been ordered. Turns out there is a audio control wholesaler next to my work. He couldn't sell at wholesale to me, but I got a better deal than Amazon.

Got the wires all cut to length last night, going to run the wires next weekend.

Soon I will be in 10 channels of audio bliss all time aligned and equalized to perfection. I have a spare 11 inch Alienware laptop that has a car charger, going to build a little dock for it in the truck so any time I need to change settings I can just boot it up and fix anything right there.

 

Harnesses are now all done. Wires are all cut to length, bundled with tesa tape and marked for their correct speakers. I used what was left of some speed wire to make the 2 harnesses, right side and left side, they are made with the standard radio colors, each side of the car will get its own 4 channel amp.

So it will go
green = rear door
white = tweeter
gray = midbass
purple = midrange
Each speaker getting 75 watts

Then each harness is labeled for right or left side. I just need to make sure I connect the correct rca cables to the correct amps as each output from the dsp will go to 2 amps (left amp and right amp). I also downloaded the audiocontrol software, took all my measurements for time alignment, set all my crossover points and got all the signals to where they should go. The rest of my equipment should be here right in time for me to get working this next weekend (if its not raining)

Plan goes as follows, saturday will be strip the inside of the truck of seats and carpet, clean vacuum, and pull all wires up and out of the way. Spray sound deadening from firewall to back of cab. Let it dry overnight, then sunday will be to install the new harnesses, install new 4 gauge power cable and blue sea fuse block. The fuse block has 3 high amp fuses and 4 small blade fuses for controllers.

With the wires run, I will lay the carpet back down. DM 810 will go under the drivers seat, 3 amps will go under the passenger seat. For a little bit they will just be mounted to a piece of fiberboard. But a pair of taco tunes amp trays will soon be replacing the wood to make more permanent mounts that keep the amps and dsp up off the floor.

Once all the parts are put in, I can fire up my basic tune, see how it sounds and then fine tune it from there. The DM 810 has a built in RTA that takes the output from the headunit and gives it a auto eq that just makes it flat going to the amps. If I really need to, I may bring it to a car audio shop with a full external RTA so they can finish the tune perfect.

I still need to finish the sub box, I havent spent much time finishing it with vinyl because Im not sure it will be staying. Depending on the output I can get with it, I may end up removing the drivers rear cubby, cutting the cubby out and making a box that fits behind the panel with a nice grill that covers the front. Will be a much more permanent subwoofer than what I have now, and will be alot stronger (made all of mdf instead of fiberglass).

Got a smoking deal on them too. Paid less for both together than the dm costs alone.

 

Got my harnesses all mostly install over the weekend. Got my new 4 gauge power wire installed too.

Started installing my amps and realized that the passenger side seat has a extra metal bar that hangs down.... this made the amps not fit

So, I had to pull the harnesses out and reinstall them to a different location. Now I have the amps wired to the storage bins under the rear seat.
My bluesea fuse box is installed in there, along with a common ground bar.
Dsp under the driver seat fits perfect.


So, I have a few things I need to finish up before its all done.

I need to finish running the wires into the doors, get the amp shelf finished so I can mount the amps
remove the extra speed wire harness from the old install and get the dsp final tune all done.

 

Small steps, but I got the wires into the doors, they are not hooked up yet, but they are at least in there ready to be plugged in.

I installed the 3 amps under the rear seats in the cubby.... they didnt fit very well and just looked like trash. So I moved on to try to find something better to mount them.
Turns out the audio control acm amps fits 100% perfect under the rear seats backrest! There is a large gap between the bottom of the seat back and the floor pan.
I put the two 4 channel amps there, got them fully wired up and ready.



Im on the home stretch and hoping to get it done tomorrow.

finish power line to battery (crimp terminal and plug into inline fuse)
wire in speakers (remove door cards and hook up wires)
Tune DSP

im going to redo the subwoofer box.

Right now Im not terribly happy with the constraints of building the sub into the pocket of the rear panel. Its not very deep, not very wide, and has too many curves.
So I plan to remove the rear panel, build a box to fit that area and just leave the panel out.

 

Got my subwoofer box all finished up and wrapped. I used a pin hole vinyl that looks kinda like the steering wheels leather. I think it turned out pretty good. I still need to remove the rear seat, remove the subwoofer from the box and bolt the box down to the rear wall. Then I need to fix the rattle in the seat back.

 

Short little update, I build a rack for under my seat to hold my signal processor. It slides in between the seat bolts and get pressed down by the seat. Im sure I will have to do some trimming, but it should keep the signal processor up and away from the floor vent.

It's made of plastic and aluminum strips. I would of just bent the plastic, but the aluminum seems to be more rigid.

 

Rack all installed, fit was perfect, doesn't move around and cost my about $15 to build.

I have new rca cables on the way, nice ones that are actually designed for car audio. Once I get them I can clean up the wires.

 

New subwoofer done. Wow is it louder than the other box! The old box that sat on the drivers side cubby was maybe .17 cu feet.... my sub asks for .5, so the new box is about .65 minus sub puts its a little over the .5 needed.

I also ordered a android head unit, new stinger 8000 rca cables (10 channels total) and the bluetooth module for my audiocontrol dsp. With the bluetooth mod I can now control the dsp with the new android headunit thats on its way. Going to take a single digital coax from the new headunit to the dsp to simplify things, no need to have 4 channels plus sub coming from the headunit when I can just use a single rca digital coax to carry it all.

Im now working on a new amp rack that will fit behind the seat on the driver side cubby. It will be mounted to the wall, but will have a plastic cover that hides it all.

 

Sprayed the roof today. Took it to the car wash after where the blowers usually make the roof shake... Not a sound from the roof after spraying it in. I only did one coat on the roof, I wish I would of done 2 or 3, so I may pull the headliner out again when I do the floors. Took about 2 hours to pull it out, spray and put it back in, should take less time if I have the seats and pillar trim out when I spray the floors.

Going to do the floors on the 4th and 5th, while I install the new rca cables and new Android head unit.

Doors I've decided will get dynamat sheets. Don't want to spray this stuff in there and get it all over the window or tracks or latch or door handle.

 

Installed the headunit today, fit is nearly perfect. I think I need to get some mounts for a standard aftermarket radio to fit it correctly though. The factory mounts only have 1 screw on each side that line up with the joying unit. You can see this at the bottom of the radio where its sunken in a little bit. Im running line level inputs still to my dsp, but sofar it sounds great. New cables should be here next week to run RCAs from the headunit to the dsp.

As it sits, everything I have tried works. All steering wheel controls work. OEM backup cam worked right away, has another input for another camera too for the front.

I got to play with the unit some more, every thing seems real nice on it. I did have to email the company, because the usb adapter was missing from the box, just waiting on a reply from them on that. I also ordered a scoche dash kit for the mounting arms so I can secure this with more than just one screw on each side. I also ran all my RCA cables today, though I need to remove the ones from the headunit to the dsp when my nice new ones show up.

Installing a car launcher tonight to give me a better interface than the stock android screen.

Tomorrow will be a big day, I have parades with the kids, fireworks, bbq and at some point I need to remove the rear door cards and wire in the rear speakers... forgot I never hooked those up.
