3rd gen unpopular opinions

I have zero problems with the KO2s in Winter in over 200k miles of all season driving (primarily in Texas). In Texas, where mesquite and prickly pear is everywhere, I had 7 holes plugged during the 50k miles that I endured them. Aside from that, they were great tires.

 

The K02 are a great 3-season tire for sure. I’ll run mine happily but they gotta go before the snow flies. I do a lot of snow and ice driving and have done many winters on every type of tire imaginable, in every sort of vehicle imaginable, and I would say k02 does not deserve the “snow peak” rating it displays. Many all-season tires will outperform them.

 

My opinion is that the 3rd gen kicks ass.

I’ve owned every generation of Toyota pickup and this is by far the most capable in every way while getting better mileage. I think it was a pretty remarkable effort by Toyota and I would buy it again without hesitation. I got the 2016 TRD Offroad with 6MT.

I knew the risk of additional little crap with a first year of a new run. That said, it’s been pretty painless on the whole and I’m so glad i got the 2016 before they started mandating some of the new safety features. It’s just perfect for me as is.

 

I don't think "winter driving" and "Texas" belong in the same sentence.

My crazy unpopular opinion is that offroading is better done with a side by side UTV, or with a horse, or a bicycle, or on foot, or maybe a CraigsList Hillbilly modified 30 year old 4x4. If you use a modern, expensive four-wheel drive pickup off road you are just going to bust it up and trash it.

 

Ironically, the most off-road capable version of every truck, TRD Pro, Rubicon, Bison, is an expensive $50,000 or $60,000 rig that most don’t dare get off the pavement.

 

With your horse / foot / bicycle argument I agree in some cases; however,
for motorized transport.....nah......that’s not the case at all.

It depends what you consider “off road” I suppose. I take my Tacoma down tight trails and in tough conditions. I’m not looking to test the absolute limits of the vehicle, but also am absolutely relying on it to get me where I’m going, carrying gear that is kept dry and warm, in a vehicle that can also do a high speed jaunt down the highway to the remote location. So far, it’s scratched all
to hell (under a nice layer of wax), but it isn’t dented. It’s taken me far and wide, and I’ve had to use all the off road features it has to get through.

A side-by-side has only a small fraction of the capabilities of a Tacoma, and a Tacoma can do just about anything you can do in a side-by-side, respecting the fact it’s a larger vehicle, including towing the stupid side-by-side to the trailhead.

Set the Tacos free!!!! Don’t keep em all cooped up in the cities!

 

Yea...nope. Nothing against the Craigslist modified, especially if you can buy anything off of Craigslist without being murdered I think you're already ahead of the game... but the nice thing about having this truck is that when there's a dirty old mountain pass road between me and my destination, I don't need to tow something else there to drive over it. Doesn't happy on the daily, but it does happen.

 

The point I was trying to make with so many fewer words. Well said.

However, we gotta give the Mr. Volt, who prefers to keep his Tacoma in the garage (?), kudos for having an unpopular opinion.......it is the title of this thread.

Mtay guys; when you all bust up your shinny expensive ass trucks climbing rocks or mudding, just make sure your buddies video it on their cell phones. That way we can all have a good chuckle when we hear the pop of metal snapping in half. Cause that sound of metal snapping in half...it's a gonna happen. Better it happen with a Craigslist truck or 4 wheeler.
