Yeah I was made aware of those a few pages back and definitely wish I would have known about it! Will keep it in mind.

Incredible job man! If my GFC wasn't already in production I think I'd be going a similar route. I like how you mixed the best of both the GFC and the Drifter. The fixed bed makes more sense to me, but I love how the sides open on the GFC.

I need to get a different antenna before my GFC is done.
Was it pretty easy to swap the internals? Since the screw holes don't appear to line up, did you just epoxy the old board in the new case?

To be fair, both the drifter and gfc have movable floor panels. But making it all fixed was much easier. And yeah a bit of epoxy was used.

ever consider doing part 1 then jerry-rigging it on an existing commercial cap? practical?

 

I did consider it briefly, but youd have to find a shitty used shell for it to be even close to financially viable and it would potentially be more work to fit the wedge part in the end.

 

Solid work, ripcord! this is one clean truck, sure puts many others to shame! Impressed with your engineer's perspective and thinking through the various aspects of getting all the components together. As a stickler for details, I really like this wedge camper. Truck looks awesome!

Wow, this is great! I've also been contemplating my own wedge build.....this might have pushed me over the top to get it done.

One question: The plastic sheeting you use, is it supported in any other way other than the crossmember in the space frame? It obviously supports the weight of a person sitting/lying in the tent far forward or on one side at the back?

 

The spaceframe provides plenty of support for the floor. Very stiff and little to no deflection with my girlfriend and myself in the tent.

When laying in it, our feet go to the front and our hips are still within the support area of the spaceframe. So its just our legs out on the cantilevered section. And as I said before, stiff with very minimal deflection

 

it seems like just doing the wedge then putting in on top of a custom heavy-duty rack would be rather straightforward. Might have to give that a shot. Not as functional (no standing up) but would make for an interesting hardshell quick-setup sleeping area

 

Definitely doable, but as I said earlier it would need more floor support if the spaceframe is not there.
