The glamour of sleeping in your truck loses with the wife eventually if she can't be comfortable or have some privacy. It was a main reason I went with a wedge solution. I use my wedge setup as a daily and weekender camping rig which is why I went GFC, Drifter (or AT Overland) is a better solution for long term camping trips imo because of the extra interior room. You can easily add interior storage compartments, kitchen and bathroom in all the wedges, but that's going to run you a pretty penny unless you DIY. If it were me I'd build a platform for cheap, try it out with the wife and see if she can live with it for the time being, but a wedge is so much more livable. Being able to stand up and change, hang out inside and have open space when weather is crap and being able to set up camp in seconds is hard to let go once you experience them. My fiancee is a city girl, we went backpacking and she thought a mouse rustling around was a bear trying to attack her; that was a fun night . She loves the wedge setup, it solves everything she hates about camping.

I DIY'd my way into the wedge cult, but after just 1 night I can already tell how much better this is going to be!

So many great options out there for wedges, I just had a lot free time to kill so I did it this way.

A few things depend on how you plan to use the inside of the bed.

    Most common preps:

Remove and seal or replace and seal bed rail caps
    seal bed corners, cubbies, etc
    bed stiffeners
some sort of suspension upgrade to help handle the extra weight (Springs, AAL's, Bags) again depends on what your use is going to be.
not all camper configs require you to remove the shark fin, dependent on your set up.

    Subscribed for ideas.
Ordered a Drifter a few months back.
I have the KB Voodoo bed rails and Mob Town tail gate.
I got a set of Rago Fab bed stiffeners but haven’t installed and might buy the Total Chaos as Goose gear couldn’t confirm if the Rago stiffeners would work with their system, which I want to add at a later date.
I’m going to order a set of rear springs from Deaver.

Can anyone confirm if I have to modify the sharks fin on a 2018 taco for a Drifter?

Third Gen Taco shark fins don’t require modification as their bed sits slightly higher than 2nd Gens.

Probably true... but those KB Voodoo bed rails lower it a bit I think... not saying your wrong but those KB rails are super thin

What other vendors provide bed rail caps for the second gen tacoma other than Vodoo?

I heard Relentless has this product but I cannot find any info about it. I definitely need to do this before I head up to Benicia.

You won’t have to modify the shark fin. The bed rails are higher on the 3rd gen and have thinner factory plastic caps than the 2nd gen. I have KBVoodoo bed rails on my 3rd gen and the Drifter clears with no issues.

We actually installed a drifter on a 2nd gen recently with KB rails and a shark fin and it also cleared. Just as a little FYI

I've got a pic or two in this post of the Rago bed stiffeners with the baseplate I made, if it helps at all.

Ahem . . . the original wedge life.

    1968 VW Westfalia.jpg
VW hasn't imported the van since the 2003 FWD Eurovan.
    2003 Eurovan July 2018.1.jpg
By 2003, some issues were resolved, like having a strong engine, strong brakes, traction control. Lift it and it's as capable as a Prerunner, but with builtin water tank, LP tank, stove, fridge, and an honest-to-goodness, real, live, kickass FURNACE!!! I do love having a builtin furnace. Too bad VW didn't import the 4WD Syncro. Alright, carry on with the modern wedgetop convo.
